As we move through life, our skin moves with us, quietly adapting to the years, the elements, and the phases of change.

But for many women over 50, one change becomes impossible to ignore: dry, tight, or itchy skin that just doesn’t feel like it used to.

We see these every day in clinic, and it’s not because you’re doing anything wrong. Dry skin after 50 is incredibly common — and more importantly, it’s treatable.

I’m Dr. Finbar, and I’m here to help you love the skin you’re in. Let’s take a closer look at what’s going on, and how to bring comfort and glow back to your skin.

Why Does Skin Get Drier With Age?

As we age, our skin naturally produces less oil and fewer natural moisturising factors. Collagen production slows down, and hormonal shifts, especially after menopause, can reduce the skin’s elasticity and hydration.

The result? Skin that feels rough, tight, flaky, or itchy, particularly on the legs, arms, and back. You might also find that your usual moisturiser just doesn’t do the job anymore.

But here’s the good news: with the right approach, dry skin is very manageable.

My Top Tips For Smoother, Happier Skin

Moisturise more – and moisturise smarter. Look for ingredients like ceramides or glycerin. If you’re very itchy, try moisturisers containing urea or menthol — these help restore your skin’s barrier and ease symptoms.
Avoid soaps. Switch to a gentle soap substitute or moisturising wash.
Stay cool. Hot baths and central heating can make things worse – cooler water and cotton clothing can make a big difference.
Listen to your skin. If you’re itchy, don’t scratch – rub in moisturiser instead.
Take time for yourself. Dry skin often flares when we’re stressed. Even a few minutes of stillness, nature, or laughter can make a real difference.

It’s Not Just About Skin

Dry skin is physical – but the way it affects us can run deeper. Many women tell me they don’t feel as radiant, or that their skin no longer reflects how they feel inside. That’s why we believe in combining medical knowledge with gentle care and real understanding.

If this speaks to you, I’ve created a short video that goes deeper into the science and solutions behind dry itchy skin over 50. You can watch it here:
