GLAMOUR & GRIT… with Suzanne Robinson Style

Local Women Stylist Suzanne Robinson shows us how to start 2025 with a wardrobe detox.
WHY BOTHER?
Fact — you are wearing 20% of your entire wardrobe! 80% of it doesn’t get worn and is taking up space in your home, and your mind. If you are storing items that don’t fit and that you never wear, ask yourself: do they make you feel good enough, every time you look in the mirror. Rethink the thought you have when the labels still on! Quit, about the money you wasted. Clothes that no longer suit your lifestyle? Go ahead. It’s like when you were painting the town red. Having a space with clothes that work for your life, and make you feel good about yourself is surely something we should all want. It doesn’t mean shopping for more. It means really seeing what you have and bringing some of those clothes back to life and moving on the rest.
SEASONALISE YOUR WARDROBE
This is an essential for me twice a year! Absolutely critical to get all your summer clothes packed away now if you haven’t already. This will help you to create space for your winter clothes. It will help you see clearly how you feel clustered so that you can see what you have and enjoy selecting your outfits. I use vacuum pack bags from Amazon that are super space-savers and perfect for storing things out of season.
WHAT STAYS AND WHAT GOES?
Now you have all your current season, time to categorise into two piles: love + wear or donate/sell. If you can’t decide on something, here’s a trick. Turn the hanger around the wrong way in the wardrobe, to flag it, and if it hasn’t been worn on your next edit (three months minimum) then it’s time to go!
I sometimes play around with just wearing something for a day that I haven’t worn in ages – I find out how I feel in it, if I get any compliments and if it deserves a place in my wardrobe.
SOMEONE ELSE’S TREASURE!
I started selling up my unworn items on Vinted last year and I was shocked at how quickly I accumulated a decent amount of cash! Anything that I can’t sell for £20 or more I give to the charity shop or piece together. I sell items that don’t sell within three months then they go to charity.
ORDER PLEASE!
Before you go any further; get the kit that will help this whole process. Firstly, lots of decent hangers and I love the velvet smart hanger hooks that allow you to save a huge amount of space in your wardrobe.
Organise in one of two ways:
• Per clothing item: all tops together, all trousers together etc.
• Per outfit: cluster your items together in the outfits you wear which work.
TAKE STOCK
Look at all your newly organised wardrobe and ask yourself:
- What colour is your wardrobe? Are there lots of colours or too much black? As you know I will always recommend that you come to me to have your colour analysis done. This sets the process out much.
- What are the gaps? Are there items that, were you to buy them, would make other pieces more wearable? Most clients don’t have enough base layers to create outfits from their separate pieces.
Now you can make any purchases more mindfully.
OUTFIT PLAN LIKE A STYLIST!
The goal is to have a collection of outfits rather than random pieces. A great way to do this is to photograph the outfits, with the shoes and accessories to match. Collect them all into an album on your phone so you can access it on those where you are stuck.
