From the Causeway Coast to the Himalayas

By Maggie, One Himalaya

Hello! I’m delighted to be writing the new travel column for Local Women Magazine. Over the next few months, I’ll be sharing stories, insights, and tips from some of the world’s most spectacular destinations — starting with a place that holds a very special place in my heart: the Himalayas.

I run One Himalaya, an independent travel company specialising in luxury and adventure travel across Nepal, India, Bhutan, and Tibet. With over two decades of experience in tourism — and a deep love for the people and landscapes of this region — I’ve seen just how transformative a trip to the Himalayas can be.

What Makes the Himalayas So Special?

It’s not just the snow-capped mountains (though they’re breathtaking). The Himalayas offer incredible diversity: lush jungles, plains, deserts, ancient temples, and vibrant cities like Kathmandu and Delhi. You’ll also find riverside towns, UNESCO sites like the Taj Mahal, and serene spots for wellness and spiritual retreats.

On my most recent trip to Nepal, I attended the Himalayan Travel Mart, explored Pokhara, and hiked near the Annapurna peaks. I’ll be sharing more about these places in upcoming posts, along with insider tips and unforgettable travel experiences.

What Can You Do in the Himalayas?

There’s something for everyone. Adventure lovers can trek famous trails like the Everest Base Camp or Annapurna Circuit, try white water rafting, mountain biking, zip lining, or even hot air ballooning with champagne breakfasts at sunrise!

If you prefer a slower pace, consider a luxury train journey or river cruise through India’s rural landscapes. For wildlife fans, safaris in Nepal and India offer a chance to spot Bengal tigers, rhinos, elephants, and exotic birdlife.

Cultural tours, food experiences, and spiritual journeys are just as popular. Think ancient monasteries, local markets, traditional cuisine, and Ayurvedic wellness in peaceful Himalayan retreats.

When’s the Best Time to Go?

The Himalayas are best visited in spring (March to May) and autumn (October to November). These months offer the clearest skies and most comfortable temperatures. If you’re visiting India or Bhutan, you’ll find vibrant festivals and colourful celebrations throughout the year.

Looking Ahead

In future blog posts, I’ll be diving deeper into these destinations — sharing tips on where to stay, what to pack, how to get there, and how to make the most of your Himalayan adventure.

If you’ve ever dreamed of standing beneath Everest, sipping tea in a mountain village, or wandering through ancient temples — this might be your sign. Let’s start planning something unforgettable.
