Step Into the Himalayas

From Everest Base Camp to hidden valleys in Bhutan, trekking through the Himalayas is an unforgettable way to experience some of the most beautiful places on Earth. Maggie from One Himalaya shares what to expect, where to go, and why now is the perfect time to plan your next big adventure.

Hi everyone, I hope you’ve been enjoying the mix of sunshine and showers recently, along with the brilliant summer events – from The Open to local markets, festivals, and of course our amazing beaches.

Summer is traditionally the peak holiday season in many places, but that’s not the case across most of the Himalayas.

From May onwards, temperatures rise, many National Parks close and the monsoon season begins, usually ending around late September.

However, higher altitude regions such as Tibet and Ladakh are ideal destinations to visit in April and September; and we’re currently busy preparing travel arrangements for clients heading to explore those regions.

We’re also looking ahead to autumn, which, along with spring, is the best time to visit the Himalayas, with comfortable temperatures, blue skies and sunny days, perfect for exploring.

Why Trekking?

In the last issue, I gave a broad introduction to the Himalayas.

This time, I’d love to focus on Ladakh, one of the most popular reasons people visit this part of the world.

Trekking is simply walking through mountainous terrain, often at higher altitudes above 3,000 metres, and soaking in breathtaking landscapes.

Whether it’s the legendary Everest Base Camp trek or the equally stunning Annapurna Circuit, Nepal is world-famous for its trekking routes.

But India and Bhutan also offer incredible experiences.

There’s something for everyone, from day hikes to short treks and beginner and family-friendly treks such as the Mardi Himal or Valley of Flowers, to more remote and challenging routes such as Upper Dolpo in Nepal or Laya in Bhutan.

What’s a Typical Trekking Day Like?

You’ll be accompanied by a professional, English-speaking local guide, and your main baggage is carried by porters (we provide a free kit bag).

You’ll only need a small daypack for things like sunscreen, sunglasses, water, and your phone or camera.

Days start with breakfast, followed by several hours of walking through a variety of landscapes – valleys, forests, meadows, mountain ridges, and traditional villages.

There are breaks for lunch and, on longer treks, most days finish by mid-afternoon.

On high-altitude treks, a slow pace aids in acclimatisation and builds in rest days.

Where Do You Stay?

There are two main styles of trekking:

  • Teahouse treks, which are the most common, staying in simple, comfortable mountain lodges.
  • Camping treks, which are used for luxury lodges or remote routes.

On some treks, there are luxury lodges and tented camps, complete with four-poster beds and butler service.

In more remote or larger groups, we use camping-style treks.

You’ll be accompanied by a full support crew to organise and cook.

All equipment is carried for you, and meals are freshly prepared each day – so all you need to do is relax and enjoy the views.

Do You Need to Be Super Fit?

No.

There are treks suitable for all ages and fitness levels, although we recommend a reasonable level of preparation if you’re doing a more challenging route.

Our youngest traveller was under 12 months old, and our oldest over 70!

The better prepared you are, the more you’ll enjoy the experience.

If you’re curious about which trek might suit you, feel free to reach out.

We’re always happy to talk through the options.

Looking Ahead

Next time, I’ll be sharing more about wellness and Ayurveda retreats, which are growing in popularity.

And if Everest Base Camp, the Annapurna Circuit, or any other Himalayan adventure is on your travel wishlist or Big Life Goals list – now is the perfect time to get in touch to find out more.

See you next time!
Maggie
