Fresh from the Farm at Chesnutt’s

Local Women editor Kim Kelly visits Chestnutt’s Farm on the north coast and discovers an honesty shop brimming with local produce and a family-run dairy that brings people closer to where their food comes from.

A Treasure Trove of Local Food

There’s something special about turning up the lane to Chesnutt’s Farm. Set on the outskirts of Portrush, the working dairy farm looks out over rolling countryside and welcomes visitors with a view as refreshing as the produce inside.

The small but beautifully stocked farm shop is a treasure trove of local food. Tray bakes, sourdough bread, sauces, teas, coffees, seasonal vegetables, and snacks line the shelves, each item carefully curated to champion local makers.

Among these are the farm’s own specialities – fresh milk, Greek-style yoghurt, and a range of meats – all produced just steps away from the shop door.

The Charm of the Honesty System

What makes Chesnutt’s particularly unique is its honesty system.

If Alison or William aren’t around, a card machine and clear instructions make paying simple. Customers come and go with ease, many already familiar with how it works. It’s a system built on trust – and judging by the steady stream of customers during a visit, it works beautifully.

Award-Winning Taste

I sampled the yoghurt, made on site, and it is nothing short of incredible. Thick, creamy, and full of flavour, it was no surprise to learn it recently won two stars at the Great Taste Awards.

The milk is equally delicious – pasteurised on site for safety while retaining that nostalgic, creamy taste that brings back childhood memories. Customers can purchase a glass bottle in the shop and refill it themselves outside, even adding flavoured syrups if they wish.

It’s a simple but brilliant idea, one William discovered on a farming trip to Holland and brought back to the North Coast.

A Family Affair

During my visit, Alison kindly showed me around and introduced me to the cows that make it all possible. There was something grounding about seeing these lovely animals up close, then stepping inside the shop to taste the results of their hard work.

It makes you appreciate not only the freshness of the produce but also the care and dedication behind it.

Chesnutt’s Farm is very much a family affair. William runs the dairy farm alongside his parents James and Ruth, while Alison and William run The Milk Hut & Honesty Farm Shop.

Diversifying into the shop has created a thriving business that locals love and visitors will treasure discovering.
