Wellness in the Himalayas

This month, Maggie from One Himalaya talks about Ayurveda and wellness retreats across India, Nepal, and Bhutan. From sunrise yoga to ancient healing rituals, discover how a wellness journey can restore balance and leave you refreshed inside and out.
A Typical Day on an Ayurveda Wellness Break
Imagine waking to a sun-kissed morning, stepping outside your private cottage, and watching tropical palm trees sway gently in the breeze as waves lap a nearby sandy beach.
After breakfast, your morning schedule includes two hours of personalised Ayurvedic treatments such as massage, warm oil therapies, or detox rituals.
Later, you might swim in the pool, walk along the beach, or simply rest.
After a light, healthy lunch, the afternoon includes a one-hour yoga and meditation class. The rest of the day is free to relax, explore tropical gardens, and enjoy the peace and quiet.
What is Ayurveda?
Ayurveda (pronounced “aye-yer veeda”) is a Sanskrit word meaning “knowledge of life.”
It’s an ancient system of holistic health and healing practiced in India for over 5,000 years. Ayurveda teaches that true wellbeing depends on balance – between mind, body, spirit, and environment.
Ayurvedic treatments may include:
- Massage with herbal oils
- Meditation and yoga
- Cleansing treatments
- Detoxification rituals
- Breathing exercises
All are designed to bring your mind and body into balance, restoring harmony and preventing disease.
What to Expect on an Ayurvedic Retreat
When you attend an Ayurvedic retreat, you’ll begin with a consultation with a practitioner who will design a personalised plan tailored to your physical and emotional needs.
Treatments may focus on:
- Stress management
- Rejuvenation and detoxification
- Specific health issues such as psoriasis or joint pain
Daily routines often include around 2 hours of treatments, yoga, and meditation, alongside fresh, healthy meals prepared to support your Ayurvedic journey.
Expect plenty of relaxation, with a wide range of vegetarian dishes and herbal teas to nourish your body.
A Journey of Renewal
Wellness in the Himalayas is more than a holiday – it’s a chance to reconnect with yourself through ancient practices that nurture body, mind, and spirit.
From India to Nepal and Bhutan, the power of Ayurveda and yoga has been helping people restore balance for centuries.
A retreat here isn’t just about rest – it’s about renewal.
