Why More Women Are Turning to Duality Healthcare

From faster answers to personalised care, Dr Blathnaid Carlin explains how the team at Duality is helping women take control of their health.
I regularly meet women who are shocked to discover they have diabetes
…or that they’ve been living with early warning signs for years without realising it. It’s far more common than many think, and in my experience, awareness is often the key starting point.
At Duality Healthcare, we want women to feel empowered, not afraid. Diabetes isn’t just about sugar; it’s about how your body manages energy every day, affecting your heart, hormones, mental health and long-term wellbeing. The good news? With knowledge, testing, and the right support, you can take control of your health and even prevent diabetes altogether.
What Diabetes Really Means
In simple terms, diabetes occurs when your body struggles to regulate blood sugar (glucose). Normally, insulin, a hormone made by the pancreas, allows energy to move from your blood into your cells to create fuel. When this process doesn’t work properly, sugar stays in your bloodstream, gradually damaging blood vessels, nerves and organs like your heart, kidneys and eyes.
There are two main types of diabetes. Type 1 is an autoimmune condition where the body attacks insulin-producing cells. It usually develops in childhood or early adulthood and always requires insulin treatment. Type 2 is much more common and becomes resistant to insulin over time, forcing the pancreas to work harder to produce enough. It’s often linked to lifestyle factors such as diet, activity, stress, sleep, hormones and ethnicity play a role too.
The good news is that with early action and support, even small lifestyle changes, Type 2 diabetes can often be delayed or even prevented.
The ‘In-Between’ Stage: Prediabetes
Before diabetes develops, many people pass through a silent stage called prediabetes. You might be feeling fine, but your blood sugar level is already higher than normal.
I often tell patients that prediabetes is like your body sending a polite wake-up call. It’s saying: “Things are getting harder for me, can you give me a hand?”
The encouraging part is that this stage is reversible. With the right support, improving your diet, moving more and managing stress can dramatically lower your risk.
Know Your Numbers: What’s HbA1c?
One of the simplest ways to check your risk is a blood test called HbA1c, which shows your average blood sugar over the past three months.
- Below 42 mmol/mol is normal.
- Between 42 and 47 suggests prediabetes, and 48 or higher confirms diabetes.
I always encourage women to know their HbA1c number. It’s like your body’s report card – clear, measurable and motivating.
Why Women Need to Pay Special Attention
Women face unique hormonal shifts, from puberty and pregnancy to perimenopause and age, which affects how our bodies manage blood sugar. Those with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) are at higher risk because insulin resistance is often part of the condition.
Pregnancy and new health issues through midlife can signal diabetes, and women experience blood sugar swings more unpredictably. We also know that diabetes affects women’s heart health more severely. Add the emotional load of juggling careers, families and caring roles, and it’s easy to see why self-care often slips. But prioritising your health isn’t selfish; it’s essential.
Spotting the Early Signs
Diabetes can creep in quietly, but some signs to look out for include:
- Feeling unusually thirsty or needing to urinate more often
- Fatigue or low energy
- Blurred vision
- Slow-healing wounds
- Recurrent infections such as thrush or UTIs
- Unexplained weight change
If any of these sound familiar, or if you have risk factors such as a family history, PCOS, being overweight, or are over 40, it’s worth checking in with your GP. At Duality Healthcare, we offer quick, affordable HbA1c testing that gives you clear answers and peace of mind.
Practical Ways to Lower Your Risk
You don’t need to overhaul your lifestyle overnight. Small, consistent changes add up.
- Rethink your drinks by swapping sugary drinks for water or herbal teas.
- Balance your plate with half vegetables, a quarter protein and a quarter whole grains.
- Move your body with whatever brings you joy – walking, dancing or gardening all count.
- Sleep well, aiming for seven to nine hours most nights to balance hormones.
- Manage stress through yoga, journaling or deep breathing.
- Know your numbers by tracking your HbA1c, blood pressure and cholesterol yearly.
Taking the First Step
If there’s one thing I want women to remember, it’s that they have the power to change their health story. Diabetes awareness isn’t about fear; it’s about confidence, control and care.
As women, we’re used to looking after everyone else, but your wellbeing is the foundation that supports the life you want to live. So take that blood test, go for that walk, and make that small change. Your future self will thank you for it.
