Cataract Surgery Through My Eyes

71-year-old Sheryll Joy shares how her experience at Solasta Healthcare in Banbridge transformed her vision, and her confidence, in just a few short days.

“I was having a few problems with my eyes,” says Sheryll Joy, 71. “My optician pointed out that I needed cataract surgery. I thought it was just in one eye at first, but then I found out it was actually both.”

After a little research, Sheryll came across Solasta Healthcare — and she’s so glad she did. “The minute I went there, I was immediately put at ease,” she says. “The first person I met was Ruth Collins, the clinic director, who’s also a nurse. She talked everything through with me about what was going to happen, and I thought, yes, this sounds perfect.”

Six weeks later, Sheryll returned for her surgery with Consultant Ophthalmologist Mr Muralidharan Upendran. “I wasn’t nervous at all,” she says. “I’m not a particularly anxious person, but even so, they put me so much at ease that I didn’t have any worries.”

The Day of Surgery

Sheryll describes the procedure as remarkably straightforward. “They put drops in my eyes to numb them and then used a little clamp to hold my eye open,” she explains. “That was probably the only moment that was even slightly uncomfortable, and even then, it wasn’t sore at all. It took about twenty minutes, and that was it. So simple.”

Aftercare and Recovery

Once her surgery was finished, Sheryll was treated to one of Solasta Healthcare’s thoughtful touches — a complimentary lunch voucher for the café downstairs. “I thought that was such a lovely idea,” she smiles. “Everyone was so kind and professional from start to finish.”

She went home with everything she needed — eye drops, sterile water and clear aftercare instructions — and was amazed by how quickly her vision began to improve. “I had it done on the Friday, and by Sunday I could see number plates in the distance,” she says. “Before the operation, I could see, but it was like there was a filmy cloud over everything. That disappeared immediately.”

Even after leaving the clinic, the care continued. “Ruth phoned me the next day at home just to check that I was okay. I thought that was absolutely fantastic,” says Sheryll.

A Life-Changing Experience

Sheryll says she couldn’t be happier with her results, or with the people who made the experience so positive.

“Everything about Solasta was wonderful — the friendliness of the staff, the calm atmosphere, and the total professionalism of my surgeon. If anyone’s thinking about getting cataract surgery, I’d tell them to go to Solasta straight away. It was a wonderful experience from start to finish.”
