What If You’re the Only Thing Standing in Your Way?

Gayle McVea, Regional Director of The Athena Network Northern Ireland East, explores how shifting from fear to action can unlock real growth — and why saying yes before you feel ready might change everything.

Sometimes growth isn’t about learning something new, but unlearning the habits that keep you playing safe.

“Have you ever found yourself saying: ‘I’ll go for it when I feel more ready’, or ‘Once things settle down, then I’ll take the next step?’ It sounds sensible, but often it’s fear dressed up as logic. For many women, it’s the quiet way we hold ourselves back — keeping ourselves safe, comfortable and small.

A growth mindset changes that story. It’s not about being fearless or endlessly positive. It’s about taking responsibility for your own progress, even when it feels uncomfortable. It’s choosing growth over safety, and action over waiting for perfect conditions.

Self-responsibility is powerful, but it can also feel confronting. It asks us to notice where we might be getting in our own way — overthinking instead of deciding, planning instead of launching, waiting until everything feels “just right”. Perfectionism often hides in these moments, keeping us tucked neatly inside our comfort zones.

Saying yes to the opportunity first, then figure out the how. Confidence comes from action, not from waiting for it to appear.

A growth mindset asks a different question: what if imperfect action is exactly what’s needed? Trusting the process is hard, but growth rarely follows a straight line. There will be lessons, pivots and pauses. None of that means you’re failing — it means you’re learning.

In The Athena Network, I see what happens when women stop waiting for permission and start backing themselves. They move from asking “Am I ready?” to asking “What’s possible if I try?” They take responsibility, embrace opportunities and allow growth to meet them on the journey.

So, if anything here resonates, consider this your invitation: say yes to opportunities, trust yourself to work out the how, and allow yourself to grow. You don’t need to be perfect — just willing.

If you’re ready to surround yourself with a community that supports your growth, challenges your thinking and cheers you on as you step forward, say yes to The Athena Network. That one yes could be the moment that changes everything.
