Start With the Foundations

Orlagh Stevenson from OS Aesthetics explains why feeling good begins long before any treatment, and why the basics matter more than you think.
Why the Basics Matter
Most people come into clinic, sit down and say,
“I just look tired.”
“Not older. Not unhappy. Just worn out.”
And honestly, I understand.
Before we talk about aesthetic treatments, I always start with the basics.
How are you sleeping?
Are you drinking enough water or mostly running on caffeine?
What skincare routine are you realistically able to stick to?
Because no aesthetic procedure can treat exhaustion, stress or burnout. And it shouldn’t have to.
The Real Foundations of Healthy Skin
The foundations matter more than people realise.
Sleep is skincare.
Hydration is skincare.
Stress management is skincare.
Even small changes — such as regular meals, fresh air and slowing down where you can — will benefit your skin long before any treatment does.
When those basics are off, your skin will reflect it.
When the Foundations Are in Place
Once the foundations are in place, aesthetics can work beautifully.
Not as a fix, but as support.
That might mean softening a frown line that has deepened over time or helping dehydrated skin look brighter and healthier again.
Subtle adjustments can help you feel like yourself again when you catch your reflection.
Natural Results First
I am very focused on natural results.
If someone leaves my clinic looking like a different person, that is not a success.
The goal is for you to look like yourself — just more rested and more confident.
I want clients to feel comfortable being open about having treatments.
My business and reputation depend on that trust.
A Gentle Guide to Aesthetics
Over the coming months, my column will build on this gently.
We will look at what comes after the basics, how to know when you are ready for treatment, what different options actually do and how to avoid the pressure to overdo it.
Think of it as an honest guide through aesthetics and wellbeing.
Consultation Does Not Mean Commitment
It is also important to say this clearly:
A consultation does not mean committing to treatment.
Sometimes it is simply a conversation, a plan or reassurance that you do not need anything at all.
That is a positive outcome too.
Make Yourself a Priority
If you have been thinking about booking but telling yourself you will do it “when things settle down”, consider this your reminder that you are allowed to make yourself a priority.
Start with the foundations.
Keep things simple and achievable.
We can take the next steps together when the time feels right.
