The Art of the Spring Reset

Jennifer McCreesh, Interior Design Director at Ultimate Interior Design, explains why true decluttering starts with intelligent storage and thoughtful design.
Spring Reset: A Strategic Approach to Decluttering
There is something about the arrival of spring that invites renewal. Lighter mornings, longer evenings and the gentle shift in season naturally encourage us to reassess our interiors. While many associate spring cleaning with dusters and donation piles, true transformation goes far deeper than a surface tidy. It begins with thoughtful decluttering and, more importantly, intelligent storage.
Decluttering is not about stripping a home of personality. It is about editing with intention. Over time, even the most beautifully designed interiors can become overwhelmed by the quiet accumulation of everyday life – paperwork tucked onto sideboards, children’s toys migrating into living spaces, kitchen worktops slowly losing their clarity.
Before rushing to storage boxes, I always advise clients to evaluate how each room is truly being used. Are the frustrations you experience daily the result of too much “stuff” or simply nowhere appropriate to place it? Often, the issue is not volume, but a lack of functional design.
This is where bespoke solutions and considered design from our practice can be transformative. Unlike off-the-shelf furniture, tailored cabinetry and fitted storage are designed around your lifestyle. Awkward alcoves become elegant shelving. Underused corners are reimagined. Hallways gain integrated seating with concealed compartments. Bedrooms benefit from wardrobes configured precisely to our clients’ needs.
The beauty of bespoke design lies in its ability to disappear into the architecture of the home. When storage is thoughtfully integrated, it does not dominate a room; it enhances it. Clean lines, concealed handles, carefully selected finishes and internal lighting elevate practicality into something refined.
Spring is an ideal time to reassess multifunctional spaces. As working from home becomes the norm, kitchen tables often serve as desks and living areas must balance relaxation with productivity. Thoughtful joinery can incorporate concealed workstations that close away at the end of the day, restoring the room to its intended purpose.
In children’s bedrooms and playrooms, adaptable storage is essential. Modular shelving, built-in drawers and window seats with integrated compartments allow spaces to evolve seamlessly as needs change, without requiring constant redesign.
However, effective decluttering is not simply about installing more cupboards.
It is about designing with foresight. As an experienced interior designer, I assess flow, proportion and balance, ensuring that added storage enhances the aesthetic rather than overwhelming it. Materials, colour palettes and hardware are selected to harmonise with the overall scheme, maintaining cohesion throughout the home.
If you are considering a reset this spring, begin by asking not “What should I remove?” but “How can my home better support me?” With considered design and bespoke solutions, decluttering becomes less about discarding and more about refining, creating interiors that feel intentional, elegant and beautifully aligned with the way you live.
