Weaning Without the Worry

Elizabeth Berry, owner of Ladybird Lane Day Nursery and Afterschool, shares reassuring advice for parents starting the weaning journey, from embracing the mess to building confidence around those all-important first tastes.
As a first-time parent, it’s completely normal to daydream about all the lovely moments ahead with your little one. Parenthood is full of so many memorable firsts, that first smile, first steps and first words.
But alongside all of those exciting milestones can come moments of doubt too, where you question your instincts or wonder if you’re doing things “right”.
Weaning is often one of those milestones. For many parents, it can feel exciting, emotional and just a little nerve-wracking. It marks such a big step in your baby’s development and independence, so if you’re feeling a mix of anticipation and anxiety, you are definitely not alone.
The first thing to remember is that there is no one perfect way to do it. Whether you choose baby-led weaning, spoon feeding, or a mixture of both, what matters most is that your baby is exploring tastes and textures in a safe, positive way.
Baby-led weaning allows little ones to feed themselves using soft, finger-sized pieces of food rather than puréed spoon feeds. Spoon feeding, on the other hand, can feel like a more familiar and structured starting point for some parents.
Both approaches have their benefits. They can help encourage independence, support fine motor skills and introduce babies to new sensory experiences.
In reality, many families naturally find themselves using a blend of both, spoon feeding some meals while also letting baby experiment with finger foods.
And that’s absolutely fine. Weaning doesn’t need to look perfect. It’s not about beautifully prepared purées or picture-perfect plates. It’s about exploration, learning and sharing a new experience together.
It is also such a lovely opportunity to begin building healthy eating habits from the very start. Baby food doesn’t have to be bland or repetitive. Offering a variety of colours, textures and flavours can make mealtimes feel fun and engaging for both you and your little one.
And if your baby pulls a face or turns away from something new, don’t panic. It can take several attempts before babies get used to different tastes and textures. Just because something is rejected the first time does not mean it will be rejected forever. Keep offering a range of foods and trust that familiarity often makes all the difference.
Alongside food, offering water and your preferred milk during weaning can help support hydration and nutrition, while also helping your little one begin to develop good drinking habits.
One of the biggest lessons during weaning is patience.
Babies are brilliant at letting us know what they think, and some days they really do feel like tiny bosses. One day your little one might gobble up everything in sight, and the next they may clamp their mouth shut and refuse it all.
That can be frustrating, but it is also completely normal. Appetites can change from day to day depending on growth, teething, tiredness and so many other little factors. The important thing is not to panic and not to force it.
Trust the process. Keep offering a variety of foods, stay calm, and remember that babies pick up on our energy. If mealtimes feel relaxed and positive, they are much more likely to become a happy part of your routine.
Most of all, trust yourself. You know your baby better than anyone, and they are also very good at telling you what they need in their own way.
Weaning is not about getting every meal “right” – it is about learning together.
There will be messy highchairs, rejected spoons, food on the floor and probably a few surprise favourite foods you never saw coming.
And that is all part of it. This is the beginning of a whole new stage for you and your little one, and while it may not always feel tidy or predictable, it is one of those wonderful firsts you will always remember.
So get your camera ready, embrace the mess and enjoy those mealtimes together.
This is one of the milestones you’ve been waiting for.
