It’s Never Too Late for Ink
More women are choosing tattoos later in life to mark milestones, honour memories or simply do something for themselves, and Courtney Kilpatrick of Ultraviolet in Limavady says meaningful ink has no age limit.
A lot of women come in a little nervous at first, especially if it’s their first tattoo, but they usually leave saying the same thing: “Why didn’t I do this sooner?”
There’s still this old-fashioned idea that tattoos have to be bold or dramatic, but so many of the tattoos I do for older women are subtle, delicate and really meaningful. It might be a fine line flower, initials, a date, a small symbol or something placed somewhere discreet. It doesn’t have to be big to be important.
For me, it’s always about making sure someone feels comfortable from the minute they walk in. I know getting a tattoo can feel like a big step, especially if you’ve never done it before, so I always take time to talk through the idea, answer any questions and make sure it feels right for them.
For a long time, tattoos were seen as something for the young, but that really isn’t the case anymore. In my studio, I’m seeing more and more women coming in later in life for their very first tattoo, and I honestly love it.
Some are marking a milestone birthday. Some are honouring someone they’ve lost. Others are celebrating a new chapter, or finally doing something they’ve wanted to do for years.
I think that’s what makes it so special. Tattoos are so personal, and there’s no age limit on wanting to express yourself or mark a moment that matters.
That’s something I really care about at Ultraviolet. I want the studio to feel calm, welcoming and relaxed, especially for people who might not see themselves as the “typical” tattoo client.
The truth is, there is no typical tattoo client anymore. Women are choosing tattoos for all sorts of reasons, and I think there’s something really powerful about doing that later in life. Sometimes it’s a mark of strength. Sometimes it’s about confidence. And sometimes it’s simply about doing something for yourself.
When it comes to meaningful ink, there’s no such thing as the right age. Just the right time.
