Stephanie Vaughan Is Redefining Accountancy

Stephanie Vaughan, founder of Vaughan Chartered Accountants, explains why her Belfast-based firm is focused on making accountancy feel clearer and less intimidating for business owners across Northern Ireland.
What first sparked your interest in accountancy?
Growing up, I was convinced I was destined to become a barrister. I loved debate and the idea of building a strong argument. However, when my exam results came through, I received an A in Maths and a B in Law, and that became the basis of my decision.
I often say I fell into accountancy rather than planned it. Looking back though, it turned out to be exactly where I was meant to be. It still involves analysing situations and solving problems, just with numbers rather than court cases. As I like to say, the numbers chose me before I chose them.
What inspired you to launch Vaughan Chartered Accountants?
Launching Vaughan Chartered Accountants came at a point when I was reflecting on the kind of career and life I wanted to build. After many years working in corporate environments, I realised I wanted greater flexibility and the opportunity to create something of my own.
Starting my own practice gave me the chance to use my professional experience while building a business that aligns with my values. It also allowed me to work more closely with business owners and create the kind of supportive, approachable firm I had always believed clients deserved.
Looking back, it was certainly a leap of faith, but one that has allowed me to build a practice I’m incredibly proud of.
Tell us a little about the business and who you work with most
Vaughan Chartered Accountants is a Belfast-based, female-founded practice supporting business owners, limited companies and self-employed professionals across Northern Ireland.
We also specialise in working with solicitors, barristers and other legal professionals, offering expert legal bookkeeping, tax advice and fully compliant Law Society NI bookkeeping services.
Whether a client runs a legal practice or an independent business, our aim is the same: to make managing finances feel simple, compliant and far less stressful.
What are the main services you offer to clients?
Our core services include accounts preparation, bookkeeping, taxation and VAT, and payroll. These are the areas many businesses and freelancers need help with most, and when they are handled properly, they create a much stronger foundation for growth.
We also support legal professionals with specialist bookkeeping and accounting services, which is an important part of what makes the business distinctive. Across all of our services, the focus is on accuracy, compliance and helping clients feel more in control of their finances.
Why was it important to build a firm that feels welcoming and approachable?
Finance is often the part of running a business that people avoid because it feels complicated or intimidating. I wanted to build a firm where clients feel comfortable asking questions and where understanding their finances becomes empowering rather than stressful.
For me, it’s not just about producing accounts. It’s about helping business owners see their numbers clearly so they can make better decisions and feel confident about the direction of their business. When business owners truly understand their finances, it changes everything. They move from uncertainty to confidence, and that’s when businesses really start to grow.
How do you help make managing finances feel less stressful for business owners?
A lot of financial stress comes from not knowing where you stand. I focus on putting clear systems in place and explaining financial information in a way that makes sense.
When business owners have up-to-date information and understand their finances, they can make decisions with confidence and focus on growing their business rather than worrying about paperwork or deadlines.
My goal is always to make accountancy feel less like a burden and more like a practical tool that helps clients move forward.
You’re a Xero partner in Belfast. What makes Xero such a useful tool for businesses?
One of the things I particularly like about Xero is how easy it is to use. The system is very intuitive, and the dashboard gives a clear snapshot of the key numbers in a business, which helps owners see how things are performing without having to dig through complicated reports.
Xero also connects with a wide range of business apps, from payment systems to inventory and time tracking, which can really streamline day-to-day administration.
If you are already using Xero, we can help you get even more from it. And if you are new to it, we can guide you through the setup and make the transition feel straightforward.
When business owners can see the numbers clearly, they feel more in control of their business, and that confidence is incredibly powerful.
What do you love most about helping clients grow with confidence?
One of the most rewarding parts of my work is seeing the shift that happens when business owners truly understand their numbers.
At the beginning, many people feel unsure or even anxious about the financial side of their business. But once they gain clarity and start to see what the numbers are telling them, their confidence grows.
I love being part of that journey, helping clients move from uncertainty to feeling in control of their business. When that happens, they start making decisions with real confidence and focusing on growth rather than worry.
Watching businesses develop and knowing I’ve played a small part in that progress is incredibly rewarding.
