Hidden Treasures and Forgotten Finds

From inherited jewellery to vintage collectibles, the team at Antique Cash Monkey share how everyday items tucked away in drawers and cupboards can sometimes hold unexpected value.

What inspired you to start Antique Cash Monkey?

Antique Cash Monkey was created after seeing a real gap in the market for a trusted, straightforward service where people could sell unwanted valuables, inherited items, jewellery, gold, watches, antiques and collectibles without the hassle or pressure often associated with auctions or online marketplaces.

We realised many people were inheriting items, downsizing, or simply decluttering and didn’t know where to turn. We wanted to create a service that was friendly, professional and accessible.

Today, we are proud to be the only company on the island of Ireland offering a dedicated postal service where people can safely send in unwanted valuables and inherited items from the comfort of their own home. At the same time, we also have offices in Ballymena where customers can call in for a more personal face-to-face experience.

Being family-run and based in Northern Ireland, trust, transparency and reputation have always been at the heart of what we do. We’ve worked incredibly hard to build our reviews and customer feedback, and we feel that reflects the level of care and honesty we try to provide every day.

What does the process look like for someone using your service for the first time?

We’ve tried to make the process as easy and stress-free as possible. Most customers begin by requesting one of our free insured postal packs online. They simply fill the box with unwanted valuables or collectibles and send it safely to us using the prepaid service.

Once the items arrive, our team carefully appraises everything and makes a no-obligation offer. If the customer is happy, payment is made quickly by bank transfer, often the very same day. If they decide not to sell, the items are returned.

For customers who prefer a more personal approach, they’re also welcome to visit our Ballymena offices in person, and we can arrange private appointments for larger or more specialist collections.

A lot of people are surprised by how simple, secure and transparent the whole process actually is.

What kinds of items do people most commonly bring to you?

Jewellery and gold are still some of the most common items we see, especially broken or unwanted jewellery that has been sitting in drawers for years. We also regularly buy watches, coins, military medals, vintage toys, silver items, cameras, pens and collectible pieces.

There has definitely been a decline in some areas of the traditional antiques market over the years, but the market for collectibles remains extremely strong. Nostalgia plays a huge part in that. Items connected to childhood memories, vintage toys, coins, medals, advertising pieces, or things people always wanted but never got as children, continue to perform very well.

Jewellery has also remained consistently strong throughout the years, both because of precious metal prices and the emotional connection people often have with those pieces.

Do people often have valuable items without realising it?

Absolutely, almost every week. One of the biggest misconceptions is that an item has to look old or extravagant to be valuable.

We regularly see people bring in tangled chains, broken jewellery, old coins, or boxes of mixed items they assumed were worthless, only to discover there’s significant value there. Sometimes it’s the precious metal content and other times it’s rarity or collector demand that makes the difference.

That’s why professional appraisal is always so important.

Have you ever come across an item that completely surprised you?

Many times. One of the fascinating parts of this business is that you never know what’s going to walk through the door or arrive in a postal pack.

We’ve seen rare military medals tucked away in drawers, valuable gold hidden among costume jewellery, and vintage collectibles that owners had completely forgotten about. Sometimes the sentimental stories behind the items are just as memorable as the value itself.

Every item has a story, and that’s what makes the work so interesting.

What advice would you give someone who thinks they might have something valuable at home?

Don’t throw anything away too quickly, and don’t assume something has no value just because it’s old, damaged or unfashionable.

Gold prices and collector markets are extremely strong at the moment, and many everyday household items from past decades are now highly sought after. My advice would be to get a professional opinion from someone trustworthy and experienced.

Even if you’re unsure, it’s always worth asking. You might be surprised at what’s sitting in a jewellery box, attic or cupboard.
