Meet the Artist Bringing Bold Colour to Gallery 1608

Gallery 1608 in Bushmills welcomes acclaimed Irish artist Tom Byrne, whose richly textured contemporary works blend spirituality, politics, celebrity and popular culture.

Born in Dublin in 1962, Tom Byrne is an artist whose work refuses to sit quietly. Bold, layered and deeply expressive, his paintings combine vibrant colour, texture and cultural commentary in a style that has become instantly recognisable.

Now featured at Gallery 1608 in Bushmills, Byrne’s work offers visitors the chance to experience one of Ireland’s most distinctive contemporary artists up close.

Byrne studied at Dun Laoghaire College of Art and Design, where he trained within the Bauhaus tradition, the influential 20th century movement which combined craftsmanship, art and technology. That grounding continues to shape his work today, where traditional techniques meet modern themes and striking visual energy.

“Religion, politics and celebrity all play equally important roles in my work,” Byrne explains.

Strongly influenced by current affairs and informed by a punk mentality, Byrne creates paintings that feel connected to both the modern world and his own personal experiences. Spirituality, popular culture and Irish literary history all weave their way through his work.

Among his influences are Samuel Beckett and James Joyce, both of whom appear throughout Byrne’s celebrated portrait series. His portraits are painted in a “veristic” style inspired by ancient Roman portraiture, capturing every line, furrow and wrinkle with remarkable honesty and detail.

At the same time, Byrne modernises the technique through expressive brushwork, rich impasto textures and vivid colour palettes that feel energetic and contemporary rather than historical.

His portrait collections have previously been exhibited at venues including Lissadell House in County Sligo, the City Assembly House in Dublin and the Luan Gallery in Athlone.

Texture also plays a huge role in Byrne’s work. Using structured layers of paint alongside wax, he creates luminous surfaces that feel almost sculptural, inviting viewers to experience the paintings beyond simply looking at them.

Swirls of jewel-toned colour move across opulent washes of paint, creating works that feel immersive, tactile and emotionally charged.

For visitors to Gallery 1608, Byrne’s collection offers something that feels both intellectual and instinctive at the same time. There is thought behind every piece, but also movement, emotion and beauty drawn from ordinary life and transformed into something extraordinary.
