Beauty is Self-Care, Not Selfish

Sara Strain from Eden Beauty reflects on why taking time for treatments is not indulgence, but an essential part of wellbeing.
Why Self-Care Matters
If there’s one phrase I hear over and over again, it’s this:
“I feel guilty taking time for myself.”
So many women still see beauty treatments as a luxury, something you squeeze in after everyone else’s needs are met. But I’ve learned, both as a mum and as a salon owner, that looking after yourself isn’t selfish. It’s survival.
I know this because I’ve felt that myself. In the early years of running Eden Beauty, I would book treatments for clients all day long, but struggle to carve out even half an hour for myself. If I wasn’t working, I felt I should be at home. If I was at home, I felt I should be working.
It took me a long time to understand that stepping away to recharge wasn’t taking me away from my responsibilities – it was making me better at them.
The Power of Pausing
When you take time out for a facial, a massage, or even just a quiet half hour to get your nails done, you’re not just booking a treatment. You’re giving yourself space to breathe, reset, and come back to your world stronger.
At Eden, I see this every day. A client walks in weighed down by work, family, or stress and walks out standing taller, calmer, more confident. Sometimes the glow is from the treatment itself, but often it’s from the permission they’ve given themselves to stop, even just for an hour.
One woman once told me her monthly facial wasn’t about her skin at all – it was the only time she truly switched off. That space changed how she showed up for her family, and she felt better for it.
The Science of Self-Care
Science backs this up too. Stress affects the skin, the immune system, even how we age. Taking time for rest and care isn’t indulgence – it’s a way of protecting your long-term health. That’s why I’m so passionate about reframing beauty as part of wellness, not separate from it.
Self-Care as Balance
For me personally, self-care looks like balance. Some days it’s investing in advanced treatments that protect my skin for the future. Other days it’s five minutes with a coffee before the school run. Both matter. Both count.
So if you’ve been feeling guilty about booking that treatment, here’s your reminder: it isn’t selfish. It’s the opposite. Because when you look after yourself, you show up better for the people around you.
Closing Thoughts
As I close up this series, I keep returning to the name we gave it: Balancing Beauty. To me, that balance isn’t just about skincare, treatments, or even business. It’s about giving yourself permission to stop, breathe, and invest in your own wellbeing – knowing that when you do, everything else benefits too.
Beauty isn’t about vanity. It’s about vitality. And that’s something we all deserve.
