Clay, Coffee and Creativity: How Rosegift Studios Is Inspiring Art in Portglenone

In the heart of Portglenone, a unique creative hub is giving locals the chance to slow down, sip coffee, and reconnect through art. Rosegift Studios, founded by 39-year-old Laura O’Kane, is more than just a painting studio—it’s a welcoming space where creativity meets calm.
Where Creativity Comes to Life
Laura’s artistic journey began long before Rosegift. Having always loved painting and drawing, she pursued art formally through a BTEC National Diploma in Art and Design. But it wasn’t until she attended a pottery class as an adult that she found her true passion. “I immediately got a wheel of my own and started practising every day,” she says. “That was about ten years ago.”
Now, that passion has become a thriving business at 54 Main Street, where Rosegift Studios offers a range of experiences—from canvas painting to pottery classes, private hire, and relaxing coffee catch-ups under a canopy of florals.
A Space for Everyone
Rosegift isn’t just for artists. It’s designed to be inclusive, accessible, and calming. “It’s a painting studio and a coffee shop in one,” Laura explains. Whether you’re dropping in for a quiet moment with a latte or celebrating a birthday with a group pottery session, the studio has something for everyone.
One of the most popular options is the ‘Paint and Sip’ night, which allows guests to bring their own drinks while painting pre-booked designs. It’s been a hit with hen parties, birthdays, and corporate events, combining creativity with relaxation.
Laura also offers off-site pottery workshops and painting sessions for schools and organisations. A recent highlight included a visit from the Tourettes Support NI team, who found the creative experience both joyful and therapeutic.
Building a Business with Heart
Balancing entrepreneurship with family life hasn’t been easy. As a mum of two boys, one of whom is autistic and another with ADHD, Laura has shaped Rosegift around her family’s needs. “I always wanted to create something flexible that works around my life,” she says.
Diagnosed with ADHD herself, Laura channels her personal challenges into her teaching. “I’ve always struggled to stay focused or present in the moment, but pottery helps me channel my energy. It’s relaxing and gives me a sense of calm.”
That calm is passed on to her students. Laura’s classes guide people through the entire creative process—from throwing clay to adding personal touches and finally glazing their piece. “It’s a special moment when students see their own design come to life,” she says.
A Growing Community
Beyond pottery and painting, Rosegift has become a local hub for creativity and connection. Laura collaborates with other local makers, such as Sharon from Molly and Me Candles, to create scented candle pots for workshops. New plans include more community events, canvas painting nights, and even candle-making classes.
As Laura puts it, “There’s so much more I want to add to the offering here. It’s about helping people reconnect—with themselves, with others, and with art.”
