Having a blonde moment

Local Women hair columnist, Clare Shongo Colour Specialist, explains how you can nourish and care for your lighter, brighter tones and ensure you’re always in your Blonde Bombshell era.

As a hair colour specialist with extensive experience and knowledge, I have a passion for blondes – from sun-kissed to icy platinum, caramel and warm honey shades.

In this column I’ll dive into the various different techniques and trends that can elevate your style. Whether you’re a life long blonde or thinking about making a change, I’ll share tips to help you achieve and maintain the perfect blonde.

BRIGHTER BLONDES

These blondes are popular especially in the spring and summer months. Brighter days – brighter hair. Lighter highlights will give a more intense, brighter overall look. Strategically placing lighter pieces will create light pops of blonde in areas more visual around the face for example, this is called face framing. Keep in mind that maintaining a bright blonde will require more frequent touch ups to keep the colour vibrant and fresh. This kind of technique would require top ups every 8–10 weeks.

LIVED-IN BLONDES

Living in a fast-paced modern world, we see this trend a lot. Whether you just don’t have time to visit the salon often or you want to pull back to give your hair a break from frequent colouring, then these techniques are for you.
Root shadows create depth and a more natural grow out appearance. It involves blending the root slightly darker than your natural shade to mimic a regrowth. Balayage or baby lights give a soft sun-kissed effect creating a natural, soft transition between colours resulting in a seamless blend for a more natural look. These kinds of techniques would require top ups every 10–14 weeks with a toning service in between at around 6–7 weeks.

MAINTENANCE

Maintaining blonde hair at home can be tricky because the colour process involves harsher chemicals making it more porous and fragile. It’s more prone to dehydration and brittleness, making it more susceptible to chemical and non-chemical damage like heat styling, chlorine, sunlight and seawater. Maintaining blonde hair at home requires a consistent hair care routine to keep it healthy and vibrant.

HOME HAIR CARE ADVICE

Use quality products that are designed to keep the integrity of the hair to a maximum like Keune vital nutrition range, it’s especially beneficial for blonde hair that can be prone to dryness and damage. It’s designed to gently cleanse and balance moisture working deep within the cortex providing essential nutrients. You can incorporate a silver shampoo giving your hair is the correct level and tone, I love Keune silver savour range it neutralises brassy tones while it’s conditioning and hydrating keeping your hair fresh and vibrant.
