Invest in Yourself! (Part 2)

Building Confidence in the Gym
Many beginners worry about being judged in the gym. Emma reassures her clients that most people are too focused on their own training to notice.
“No one’s judging you. Everyone’s thinking about their next exercise or what they’re having for dinner later. If someone is looking at you, they probably want to help, or they fancy you!”
Emma encourages clients to start small – perhaps with one machine – and build confidence before progressing to free weights.
The Role of Nutrition in Training
Nutrition is a cornerstone of Emma’s coaching.
“Protein is the foundation – it’s key for muscle growth and shaping your body. Carbs often get demonised, but they’re your energy source and fats are equally important. I always tell clients: don’t cut out the foods you love. That only leads to binging later. If you want the cupcake, eat the cupcake – just make it fit your daily intake.”
Her clients receive personalised calorie and macro targets, but flexibility is always emphasised. She even shares recipe booklets with quick, simple meals.
Favourite Training Style
Emma loves strength training:
“There’s nothing like seeing your body change and grow stronger through lifting. I’m not into long, gruelling workouts. I’m lazy in that sense – give me my steps and something heavy to lift, and I’m happy.”
The Rewarding Side of Coaching
For Emma, the best part of being a personal trainer is seeing clients surprise themselves.
“When someone lifts heavier than they thought they could, or hits a personal best, or steps on the scales and feels proud – that’s unbeatable. Knowing I’ve helped them change how they see themselves – that’s the best feeling in the world.”
Advice for Beginners
Emma’s top advice for anyone starting their fitness journey:
- Keep it simple. Start with daily movement – aim for 8–10k steps.
- Add cardio. Essential if your goal is tone and sculpt.
- Invest in yourself. Work with a trainer in person or online to get a tailored plan and the accountability you need.
“Having someone in your corner makes all the difference when you’re just starting out.”
