Let’s Talk About Endometriosis

Gillian Segasby of Ultrasound NI explains how early scanning can provide answers, reassurance, and vital support for women living with endometriosis.

With more than 20 years’ experience in diagnostic imaging, I’ve seen firsthand the life-changing impact ultrasound can have. At Ultrasound NI, our mission is to make private scanning more accessible and empowering—especially for women navigating difficult, often misunderstood health issues.

One of the most common yet underdiagnosed conditions we see in our Bangor clinic is endometriosis.

What Is Endometriosis?

Endometriosis occurs when cells similar to the lining of the womb grow outside of it—often around the ovaries, fallopian tubes, bowel, bladder, and pelvic lining. These cells continue to respond to monthly hormonal changes, breaking down and bleeding during each cycle—but with no way to leave the body. This leads to inflammation, scarring, and significant pain.

Common Symptoms of Endometriosis

Symptoms can vary, but may include:

  • Chronic pelvic pain
  • Painful periods
  • Pain during urination or bowel movements (especially during your period)
  • Bleeding from the bladder or bowel
  • Pain during or after sex
  • Fatigue
  • Difficulty getting pregnant

Because these symptoms mimic other conditions like IBS or pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), many women go undiagnosed for years.

How Can Ultrasound Help?

Transvaginal ultrasound (TVS) is a reliable, non-invasive tool for assessing gynaecological symptoms. It can:

  • Help identify the cause of pain
  • Map the extent of disease
  • Monitor suspected endometrial tissue
  • Offer early reassurance with fast results

TVS is considered the most effective first-line method for investigating suspected endometriosis.

When Should You Consider a Scan?

You should consider booking an ultrasound if:

  • You suspect you may have endometriosis
  • Your symptoms are impacting your daily life, work, or relationships
  • You’ve seen no improvement from other treatments

Why Choose Ultrasound NI?

  • No GP referral needed – self-referrals welcome
  • Immediate results from your scan, including detailed reports for treatment or onward referral
  • Affordable – full pelvic scan from just £140
  • Specialist team – our sonographers are experienced in women’s health and gynaecology
  • Faster access – avoid long NHS waiting lists and get clarity sooner

If you’re dealing with symptoms of endometriosis, please know that you’re not alone—and you don’t need to suffer in silence. Early scanning can offer answers and help you take the next step in your care journey.
