Let’s Talk Rugs: How to Choose the Right One for Your Space

Rugs can make or break a space. Yet for many, they’re one of the most difficult elements to get right in a room. What size should you choose? Where should the furniture go? What pattern, what colour, what texture?

As an interior designer, I get asked this all the time—and with good reason. The wrong rug can throw off the balance of a room, while the right one will tie everything together beautifully. Here are my go-to tips for choosing the perfect rug for your space—without pulling it out from under you.

1. Get the Size Right

In my opinion, when it comes to rugs, bigger is always better. Rugs are meant to help define a visual zone and anchor your furniture.

For living rooms:

• The rug should fit under the front legs of each piece—at minimum. Ideally, all four legs of the main furniture pieces would sit on the rug, but if not, make sure at least the front legs of the sofa and chairs do.

For dining rooms:

• The rug should extend far enough so that even pulled-out chairs are still comfortably placed on it.

2. Think Texture

Texture helps create mood. Want a relaxed, coastal vibe? Opt for jute or sisal. Going for something more luxurious? Try a velvet-pile wool rug—sumptuous feel and elevated style in one.

Texture also plays a big role in how warm and layered a space feels, so don’t be afraid to go bold here.

3. Consider Colour Carefully

Don’t pick a rug in isolation. Think about how it fits with your overall palette.

• Dark furniture on a dark rug? It might disappear.
• Light furniture on a light rug? It could look washed out.

The rug should ground your furniture and enhance the contrast where needed.

4. Use the Rug as a Backdrop—or a Statement

A great rug acts as a backdrop, tying all your decor together and setting the mood. But sometimes, it can be a statement piece too—especially if your furniture is quite minimal or neutral.
