Lots of patients are asking me about lips at the moment, and many are looking for a subtle enhancement. Every person has different concerns, so I thought we would take a closer look at this treatment option this month.
Lip enhancement procedures can add fullness or restore lost volume as we age, while also helping to decrease wrinkles around the mouth and improve lip contour and harmony with facial features.
Adding volume to the lips with injectable fillers can restore youthful fullness lost with age, enhance naturally thinner lips and create better harmony where asymmetry is present.
Understanding Your Lips
Lips come in many different shapes and sizes. The key to a beautiful lip enhancement procedure is maintaining appropriate contour and balance between the upper and lower lips, as well as harmony with the rest of the facial features.
The lips can be divided into several different areas that can be addressed with both surgical and non-surgical procedures.
Youthful and attractive lips:
- Defined Cupid’s bow and vermillion border
- Smooth upper lip skin that is typically less than 2cm from the base of the nose
- Slight upturn at the oral commissures, or lip corners
- Full red lips, with the lower lip fuller than the upper lip
- A subtle amount of teeth showing with a relaxed mouth
The goal of lip enhancement procedures is to enhance the features that make lips look youthful and balanced. Lip enhancement procedures performed by us will add volume while maintaining the appropriate contour and shape.

The progression from a flat lip to a fuller lip takes time and should always be done gradually over several years. The lips shown below took five years to accomplish without excessive stretching or damage to the lip area. Don’t rush the process… trust the process.
Lip Filler Injections Can:
- Add volume to deflated lips, making them appear more symmetrical
- Define the borders and shape of the lips
- Soften “lipstick” lines
- Reverse downturned corners of the mouth

Non-Surgical Lip Enhancement
Some patients naturally have thinner lips in their youth, while others notice significant volume loss over time. As the lips lose volume, they become less projected and lines can begin to form around the edges.
Injectable fillers such as Teosyal Kiss or Juvederm work beautifully to enhance the natural shape of the lips and give a fuller, softer appearance to deflated lips. Adding volume can help balance the face and create a softer, more feminine appearance.
To improve “lipstick lines” or barcode lines that form at the border of the lip, a newer technique is now used at Portstewart Family Dental. A filler can be used to restore the lips rather than injecting the lines individually, helping to ensure a smooth finish instead of a lumpy appearance.
Adding volume along the vermillion border can also soften lines while restoring shape and definition to deflated lips. Fillers can also help reverse downturned corners of the mouth, which can often create a sad or tired expression.
