REVIEW: DEAR EVAN HANSEN AT THE GRAND OPERA HOUSE BELFAST

The cast is phenomenal, the soundtrack is outstanding, and the production is simply perfect – if you have a teenage child, bring them to see this extraordinary musical.

Dear Evan Hansen—the Broadway sensation that took the world by storm in 2016—continues to prove why it has won Tony, Grammy, and Laurence Olivier Awards. With its unforgettable score and deeply moving performances, this production at the Grand Opera House Belfast is nothing short of spectacular.

At the heart of the show is Ryan Kopel, who delivers an extraordinary performance as Evan, a socially anxious teenager whose well-intentioned lie spirals into an overwhelming awkward new life. Kopel’s portrayal is a masterclass in emotional depth—his rendition of Words Fail left the audience completely captivated. Stepping into a role previously helmed by the likes of Ben Platt and Sam Tutty is no small feat, but Kopel more than rises to the challenge, making Evan his own. While Evan’s actions are morally complex, Kopel ensures that audiences see beyond them, evoking sympathy for a boy drowning in his own internal struggle.

The supporting cast shines just as brightly. Tom Dickerson as Jared brings much-needed comic relief with impeccable timing, while Lauren Conroy is effortless as Zoe, her stunning vocals adding weight to her role. West End star Alice Fearn is excellent as Heidi, Evan’s overworked mother, delivering a performance filled with heartbreak and resilience.

Visually, the production is striking. A dynamic set of moving glass panels, combined with bold lighting and a soundtrack packed with raw emotion, pulls the audience into Evan’s world. Dear Evan Hansen is unafraid to tackle difficult themes—teenage mental health, grief, loneliness, and the dangers of performative activism.

In a world where youth mental health struggles are on the rise, this musical remains as relevant as ever. The disconnect between teenagers and the adults in their lives lingers long after the curtain falls, a stark reminder of hidden battles waged behind closed doors. Yet, at its core, Dear Evan Hansen is about self-acceptance and finding peace within.

Whether through laughter or heartbreak, this production leaves an indelible mark—an emotional rollercoaster that Belfast audiences won’t soon forget.
