REVIEW: JOSEPH AND HIS AMAZING TECHNICOLOR DREAMCOAT AT THE GRAND OPERA HOUSE

Go Go Go Joseph! We are on our feet, dancing and belting out those classic songs – and loving every minute of it!

I can confidently this is the best production of Joseph I have seen – and I have seen many!  The energy, talent, and sheer joy radiating from the stage made for a truly memorable evening at the Grand Opera House last night.

We all know the story and it’s been around for a long time, yet this production managed to make Joseph quite different. It was considerably more fast-paced than I remember with more dancing, including a tap sequence and a cancan!

The standout star of the show was undoubtedly Christina Bianco as the Narrator. A true pocket rocket, Bianco brought immense vocal power, comedic timing, and charisma to the role. Her voice soared effortlessly through Andrew Lloyd Webber’s iconic score, and her ability to switch between multiple characters (she plays Jacob and Pottifer’s wife) with ease added depth and humour to the production. It’s rare for the Narrator to steal the show in Joseph, but Bianco did just that.

Adam Filipe took on the title role with confidence and charm. His rendition of Close Every Door was particularly moving, showcasing both his strong vocals and emotional depth. While he certainly fit the bill as the beloved son, I must admit that the jealous brothers nearly stole the spotlight in some of their numbers, especially One More Angel in Heaven and Those Canaan Days, which were both brilliantly staged and performed.

The children in the production were a revelation. I’ll be honest—I’m not usually a fan of large child ensembles in musicals, but this group was exceptional. They took on multiple roles with skill and enthusiasm, seamlessly integrating into the wider cast without feeling like an add-on. Their presence enhanced the storytelling rather than distracting from it.

X factor’s Joe McElderry’s turn as Pharaoh was a massive hit with the audience. The cheers and applause he received were well deserved, as he fully embraced the Elvis-inspired role with charisma, humour, and impressive vocals. His performance as the fading star added an extra level of fun to an already vibrant production.

Beyond the performances, the production itself was a feast for the senses. The staging was inventive, the choreography dynamic, and the costumes dazzling. The live orchestra brought the score to life beautifully, adding to the overall grandeur of the experience.

This production of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat is a joyful, high-energy spectacle that delights from start to finish. Whether you’re a lifelong fan of the show or seeing it for the first time, this touring version delivers in every way. I highly recommend grabbing a ticket!
