REVIEW: ‘NOW THAT’S WHAT I CALL A MUSICAL’ AT THE GRAND OPERA HOUSE
The Grand Opera House came alive last night with the electrifying debut of Now That’s What I Call A Musical, a high-energy jukebox musical that delivers pure joy.
In short, this is the best show I have seen in a long time – don’t miss it!
Directed and choreographed by Strictly legend Craig Revel Horwood, it was nothing short of a masterclass in giving the (largely female) audience exactly what they want!
From the very first note, I was hooked as a medley of 80s classics started. I knew every single song – as did the rest of the audience who joined in singing and clapping. The sound quality was flawless
The action is split between a younger and a more mature cast – with incredible performances from each and every cast member who gave it their all every moment of the show.
The energy of the younger cast was infectious, and their vocal and dance performances were flawless, breathing new life into beloved hits. The ‘up-and-coming star’ vibe and sheer fun they were obviously having on stage, injected the show with a fresh dynamism, making every number feel like a celebration.
The older cast members, were equally impressive, bringing a wealth of experience and charisma that anchored the production. Nina Wadia of EastEnders fame was perfection. Who knew she could sing?! Her comedy and genuine warmth shone through, and it was apparent the younger cast loved being on stage with her.
Together, the multigenerational cast created a heart-warming chemistry. They worked together brilliantly, and every cameo role was played out to perfection. They are a hardworking cast with many taking on multiple roles, each with an entirely new dynamic and energy.
I loved the use of actors of all shapes, heights, ages and sizes, giving it an authentic feel. As a woman I could see myself represented on that stage, which is really unusual in a West End production.
Craig Revel Horwood’s dual role as director and choreographer shone brightly. The choreography was exquisite, blending razzle-dazzle spectacle with moments of stunning simplicity. Revel Horwood clearly knows how to give the people what they want—a night of feel-good, sing-along magic that never felt contrived or overblown.
The musical itself was a perfect balance of storytelling and song, with the narrative cleverly threading through an impeccable playlist. Each song was a hit, and the transitions between numbers were seamless. The staging, lighting, and costumes added a dazzling polish to the evening.
Carol Decker from T’Pau was sensational, her vocals proving as powerful and evocative as ever. Her presence added such fun and power, to a production already brimming with talent, and she was clearly having as much fun as the audience. It was pure nostalgia hearing her belt out China In Your Hands and she sounds amazing.
Now That’s What I Call A Musical is a triumph—a celebration of timeless pop, exceptional talent, and the sheer joy of live performance. It left the audience buzzing and begging for more. If you have the chance to see this production, grab it. It’s a night out you won’t soon forget.
Five stars! 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
