With summer around the corner, we are all enjoying the longer hours of daylight and hopefully more sunshine.

While we appreciate the brighter days, strong sunshine and solar gain in our homes can quickly become a problem, so how do we shade our homes while adding to the aesthetics of our interiors?

It is hard to believe that sunlight could possibly become a problem in our climate but with our new build homes being so well insulated and the increasing architectural trend for large expanses of glazing, a slight increase in sunshine can mean a large increase in the internal temperature for our homes. Even if the temperature from solar gain is not an issue, sun fading on our beautiful interiors and being woken at 5am in the morning is an issue for most of us.

So, what options do we have? There are a number of options when it comes to sun-shading for our windows. Blinds, particularly motorised blinds, are becoming one of the most popular with contemporary homes. Motorised roller blinds are both discrete and functional. Rolling up tight out of the way when not in use but ready to shade your interior at the touch of a button. They can even be discreetly recessed out of sight in a window reveal if planned for early enough in the build stage and with full integration can even be controlled from your phone or smart device.

If you prefer something a little softer, sheer curtains have become hugely sought after particularly for large areas of glazing. Sheer curtains diffuse light, helping stop sun glare and solar gain, while giving additional privacy and improving the acoustics of a space. Sheers are a great option for those who feel they still need the warmth of curtains but do not want the heavier feel of more traditional curtains. Again, if planning ahead, recessing slimline curtain tracks behind ceiling coving and running your sheers from ceiling to floor really adds to that feeling of luxury.
