The Power of Clinical Reflexology for Women’s Health

Caring Hands Midwife Barbara Strawbridge shares how reflexology, including the specialised Reflex Zone Therapy for pregnancy, can support women through fertility, pregnancy, postnatal recovery, menopause and beyond.
Reflexology as a Holistic Approach
When people first hear the word reflexology, they often picture a relaxing foot massage. And while relaxation is certainly one of its benefits, clinical reflexology is much more than that. It’s a therapeutic technique that works with precise reflex points on the feet.
In my practice, Caring Hands Midwife, I have seen how powerful it can be for women at every stage of life. With more than 38 years in nursing, health visiting and midwifery, I’ve always been passionate about supporting women. Reflexology felt like a natural extension of that – a way of offering gentle, holistic support alongside more traditional care.
The principle is simple: reflex points correspond to different parts of the body. By working these points, we can encourage balance, relieve discomfort, and support the body’s natural ability to heal.
Fertility
For women on their fertility journey, reflexology can provide a calm space in what is often an emotional and stressful time. Stress itself can affect hormones, so finding ways to relax and rebalance is important. By focusing on reflex points linked to the reproductive system and endocrine glands, I can support the body’s natural rhythms.
While reflexology doesn’t promise pregnancy, many women find it helps them feel more centred and in control as they try to conceive.
Pregnancy
During pregnancy I use a specialist technique called Reflex Zone Therapy. Developed in Europe, it was designed to safely support women throughout all three trimesters. It can ease symptoms such as nausea, backache, swelling and insomnia, and help prepare the body for birth.
Women often tell me they sleep better, feel calmer, and are more comfortable after treatments – and that makes such a difference at this special time.
Postnatal Recovery
Support doesn’t stop once the baby arrives. Clinical reflexology can be particularly helpful in the postnatal period, easing constipation, supporting lactation, lifting low moods and aiding recovery.
Those early weeks and months can be overwhelming, and having a safe, gentle treatment to restore balance can make a real difference to both body and mind.
Menopause
Another area where clinical reflexology can be truly supportive is menopause. The physical and emotional changes that come with it can be overwhelming – from hot flushes and disturbed sleep to anxiety and fatigue.
By working reflex points connected to the nervous and endocrine systems, treatments can ease some of these symptoms and restore a sense of wellbeing. Just as important, it gives women a space to rest, reflect, and feel listened to.
Everyday Support
Reflexology can also help with a wide range of everyday concerns – migraines, digestive issues, stress, musculoskeletal pain. Each session is unique, shaped around the woman in front of me and what she needs in that moment.
For me, reflexology is not about quick fixes but about supporting women as whole people – body and mind.
Final Thoughts
As a health professional, safety and appropriate treatment are always paramount. My background in anatomy, physiology and clinical care means women can feel confident they are receiving treatments that are not only holistic but also grounded in knowledge and expertise.
At Caring Hands Midwife, my aim is always the same as it has been throughout my career: to be there for women, wherever they are on their journey. Reflexology may look simple, but in the right hands it can be a deeply powerful tool for health and wellbeing.
