The Specialist Behind the Smile

From complex oral surgery to full smile reconstruction, Jason Henry, founder and lead clinician at Rosconnor Specialist Dentistry, shares how the award-winning practice has grown over 25 years and why patient care remains at the heart of everything they do.

Celebrating 25 Years of Dentistry Care

Specialist Referral Clinic

At Rosconnor Specialist Dentistry, our clinicians bring extensive specialist knowledge and experience, ensuring the highest standards of care.

What is Rosconnor Specialist Dentistry?

Rosconnor Specialist Dentistry is a multi-disciplinary referral practice for patients with more complex dental problems and needs.

Patients are referred by their family dentist for the management of surgical dental issues such as the removal of teeth, lumps and bumps in and around the mouth, and the treatment of dental cysts and chronic infections.

We also treat failing and broken-down teeth, tooth loss caused by chronic gum infections, and patients who have suffered injuries or trauma and need reconstructive dentistry and surgery to restore their smile and function.

We provide sedation services to help very anxious patients and make longer, more complex procedures as comfortable and relaxing as possible.

Rosconnor Specialist Dentistry is part of the Portman Dentex Group, one of the largest providers of private and NHS dental care in the UK and Ireland.

What type of work do you do?

I am a GDC Specialist in Oral Surgery and I spend my time treating the more complex cases within the practice.

I work with a wide range of patients, from teenagers to older adults, and often help young patients with buried or impacted teeth that have not erupted normally. If not treated, these can lead to missing teeth, crooked smiles and poor dental function.

Sedation can be a great way to help these patients feel relaxed and supported through more invasive treatment.

My surgery work with adult patients has two main themes. I treat referred patients who need more complex teeth removal, and I also treat patients who need missing or failing teeth replaced with dental implant-supported restorations.

I tend to be referred the cases other dentists do not want to treat because of the surgical difficulty involved. Over the last 30 years, I have built up experience and developed a wide range of skills and techniques to help manage these more difficult cases successfully.

For example, wisdom tooth removal can be very straightforward for one patient, but in more complex cases the tooth may need to be carefully sectioned and removed in small pieces to protect sensitive nerve tissues in the lips and face. These procedures can take up to 90 minutes and may be carried out using microscope magnification.

I enjoy the challenge these surgical procedures bring, and I really value being able to help each patient with the issue they are struggling with, while making the whole journey as straightforward as possible.

My job satisfaction comes from seeing patients recover well and return delighted with the positive outcome of their surgery. Reconstructive surgical dentistry can range from replacing one missing tooth with an implant to full-mouth dental reconstruction. I enjoy the creative side of dentistry, helping patients restore their smile, rebuild confidence and sometimes make a huge difference to their quality of life.

What makes you tick?

I am a self-confessed workaholic. I work five days a week carrying out clinical treatments, but I also spend many extra hours planning patients’ treatment and keeping up with advances in the dental world.

Outside work, my free time is spent with my family and my other passion, cycling. I love the freedom and thrill of cycling and still compete regularly. I am the current Irish Masters Track Sprint Cycling Champion and a past Irish Masters Road Cycling and Cyclocross Champion.

What has made Rosconnor Specialist Dentistry so successful?

Hard work and having a great team of staff with similar values and vision.

I am very blessed to work with a great team of people around me every day at Rosconnor Clinic. Mandy, Sharon and Heather are the dual-site practice, clinical and office managers, and they form the backbone of the services we provide in Ballymoney and the City of Derry.

The nursing and clerical staff also work tirelessly to help ensure the dental specialists deliver the best care and support for our patients.

We try to treat every patient as we would our own family. It can be a tough job some days, but we try and make it fun.

We are always striving to improve our patients’ journey and make the services we offer as user-friendly as possible for both patients and referring dental colleagues.

It will always be a work in progress as Rosconnor Specialist Dentistry grows and evolves each year, and we will certainly be aiming to make the finals of Dental Clinic of the Year again in 2026!

Working with Referring Dentists

We value strong partnerships with local dentists, enhancing your services and expanding treatment options for your patients. Our clinicians have long experience treating referred patients and will only address the specific issue referred to us.

All patients remain under the care of their own general dentist, allowing our team to focus solely on their specialist fields. After treatment, patients return to their dentists with clear communication about any follow-up or maintenance required.
