Who Has Your Back?

By Joanna Denton – The Ridiculous Coach
Let’s talk about something that doesn’t come up enough: who’s really in your corner?
In a world where we’re pushed to build massive networks, grow social followings, and shout the loudest in the room, I want to offer a different approach. Forget big numbers. Focus on the people who truly care.
I recently heard a woman say:
“It’s amazing feeling to be truly celebrated for who you are, and not merely tolerated for what you do.”
It struck a chord. I was in a group where we were reflecting on the end of a three-month coaching journey. One woman shared how much that support had meant — not because anyone fixed things for her, but because we saw her. We backed her without needing her to be shiny or impressive.
That’s what real community looks like.
We Don’t Need Huge Networks
For years, I chased the idea of “building a network.” I went to every business lunch, LinkedIn event, and panel talk you could name. But I often left feeling hollow. It was all surface-level, with little space for the truth of who I was or what I was going through.
Eventually, I stopped looking outward and began focusing inward.
Now, I lean into a much smaller group — the people who see all of me (yes, even the messy bits), and stick around anyway.
When things go wrong, I turn to my community. They don’t offer easy fixes, but they offer presence. They let me know I’m not alone. That is powerful.
Celebrate Each Other Without Conditions
In the same way, this circle also celebrates my wins — not because they benefit, but because they’re genuinely happy for me.
We need that. We need spaces where we can succeed and struggle without masks. Where we can say, “I’m not okay,” and not be met with discomfort or silence.
And we can be that for others too. That’s how we build true connection.
Forget the 2,000. Keep the 20.
I’m not here for the endless reach of LinkedIn. When I want to feel seen, I don’t scroll my contacts. I message my people.
So if you’re feeling lost in the noise, here’s your reminder:
💬 You don’t need a giant network.
💬 You need a few people who care.
💬 Find your humans — and be that human for others.
Because when the hard days come, those are the people who will remind you that you’re not alone — and that being you is more than enough.
