Why a Dental ‘Check-Up’ Is About Much More Than Teeth

Aisling Lalor from Lalor Clinic explains why regular professional dental examinations can reveal far more about your health than many people realise.

The phrase “dental check-up” makes it sound very simple.

A quick look at your teeth, perhaps a scale and polish, and then back out the door again until the next appointment rolls around.

But according to Aisling Lalor from Lalor Clinic, that description does not even come close to reflecting what is actually happening during a professional dental examination.

“In reality, it’s a very important assessment of both your dental and your wider health,” she explains.

“At Lalor Clinic, we gather a detailed medical history, assess the soft tissues in your mouth, examine your teeth and gums carefully and ask questions based on what we see clinically.”

Depending on the patient and their oral health needs, examinations may take place every six months or annually. Dental X-rays are also taken periodically to help identify issues that cannot always be seen during a visual examination alone.

“These radiographic images allow us to assess bone levels, detect dental decay and sometimes identify infection or pathology,” Aisling explains.

Oral Health and Overall Health

Increasingly, research is showing just how closely oral health is linked to overall health and wellbeing.

“Evidence now supports that poor oral health is linked to many systemic diseases, some of which can become life-threatening,” says Aisling.

Conditions such as heart disease, diabetes and oral cancer can all have links to oral health, while deficiencies including Vitamin B, iron and zinc can also sometimes present through symptoms in the mouth.

Some conditions may be autoimmune in nature, while others can be linked to diet, oral hygiene, smoking, alcohol consumption or genetic factors.

“Often the mouth can tell us a great deal about what is happening elsewhere in the body,” Aisling says.

“That’s why regular examinations are so important. We are not simply looking for cavities.”

More Than Just Teeth

Professional dental examinations also allow dentists to identify problems with the jaw joint and bite that patients themselves may not even realise are developing.

“If jaw issues are left unmanaged, they can eventually lead to tooth damage or even tooth loss,” Aisling explains.

Grinding, clenching and uneven wear can all place strain on teeth over time, particularly during periods of stress.

By identifying these issues early, treatment plans can be developed to help protect long-term oral health before more serious damage occurs.

The Importance of Early Detection

Like many areas of healthcare, prevention and early diagnosis remain key.

The earlier dental issues are identified, the easier they are often to manage.

“A professional dental examination gives us the opportunity to identify concerns early and create a treatment plan tailored to each individual patient,” Aisling says.

For many patients, regular appointments also provide reassurance and continuity, allowing changes in oral health to be monitored over time.

Continuing to Evolve

At Lalor Clinic, Aisling and her team continue to invest in further training, diagnostic knowledge and new technology to help deepen their understanding of patients’ oral and dental health.

“We are continually developing our knowledge and introducing new tools to help us assess and support our patients more effectively,” she says.

And while the phrase “dental check-up” may remain part of everyday language, Aisling hopes more people begin to recognise the real value behind those routine appointments.

“I hope people understand now why I question the relaxed term ‘dental check-up’,” she says.

“It’s about so much more than teeth alone.”
