Winnie’s World

From toasties and traybakes to thoughtful gifts and heartfelt chats, Winnie has turned her Broughshane lifestyle shop and coffee stop into a local institution. She tells Local Women how Winnies1975 began and why it’s so much more than just a shop.
How did the idea for Winnies1975 first come about?
It actually happened very unexpectedly. I was working as a behavioural support assistant when the chance came up to open our own shop, and without hesitation, my husband Greg and I went for it – we knew in our hearts it was something special. After months of planning, late nights, and a few nerves along the way, we opened our doors in 2016 as a Home & Lifestyle store.
When did the coffee shop part of the business come into play?
In 2018, we looked at the storage space at the back of the shop and thought, this could be more. We transformed it into a cosy coffee shop and it quickly became a local hub, a place where people come not just for the food and drinks, but for conversation, connection, and comfort. It really feels like a community space.
Where did the name ‘Winnies1975’ come from?
It was a family decision! I sat down with my three daughters and we threw around ideas until “Winnies1975” came up. It just felt right – it’s warm, nostalgic, and full of heart. The ‘1975’ is a little nod to our roots, and everything about the name reflects the kind of space we wanted to create.
What does ‘home from home’ mean to you?
It’s everything. From the very beginning we wanted people to feel relaxed the moment they walked through the door. Whether you’re here for a quiet coffee, a friendly chat, or just a breather from a busy day, we want you to feel like you’re right where you belong. The soft lighting, the homely décor, the smell of coffee and home baking, it’s all part of that warm, comforting feeling.
Supporting local seems really important to you – why?
It’s part of who we are. We’re passionate about championing local makers and producers. From our House Bean by Bailies Coffee in Belfast to the incredible Irish Black Butter we discovered in Carnlough – everything we bring in has a story behind it. We’ve met the people, heard their passion, and we love passing that on to our customers.
What are your bestsellers in the coffee shop?
Our toasties are legendary! People try them once and keep coming back – they’re crisp, golden, and packed with flavour. And the sweet treats are just as popular. From gooey traybakes to warm, fresh scones, everything is baked with love.
And in-store?
We’ve stocked a carefully curated selection of homeware and gifts, everything from Galway Crystal to FieldDay candles from Co Down and Ivy & Twine from Scotland. It’s a blend of timeless charm and local beauty. Whether you’re treating yourself or looking for that perfect gift, there’s always something special to find.
Tell us about Broughshane. What’s it like running a business there?
Broughshane is stunning. It’s known as the Garden Village of Ulster, and it really lives up to the name with floral displays and a lovely community spirit. With Slemish Mountain nearby, we get lots of visitors who stop by after a walk or a day exploring. That steady footfall has been so good for us. The pride the village takes in its appearance really mirrors the experience we want to offer in our shop.
You’ve recently expanded – tell us more!
Yes, we’ve just opened a brand-new Winnies1975 store in Magherafelt. It doesn’t have a coffee shop, but it’s full of our favourite homeware and lifestyle products. It’s our way of bringing a little piece of the Winnie’s magic to a new community. Back in Broughshane, we’re gearing up for some of our favourite events – including our annual Christmas Discount Day and our much-loved Ladies Night, which is always full of fun, laughter, and special treats.
