Worry Less When They’re Away

After designing her award-winning Help You Home app, Gráinne Bankhead shares how small safety habits and smart tools can help families feel calm and connected when loved ones travel.
There’s a moment most parents will know well. That feeling when someone you love is heading off and you say, “Send me a wee message when you get there.” You tell yourself not to worry, but until that message comes through, your mind doesn’t rest.
Whether it’s their first trip abroad, heading to a festival, or starting university life, that quiet worry really goes away.
I’ve felt that same fear myself while travelling. That moment when something goes wrong and you don’t know what to do next. It’s a horrible feeling that stays with you. It’s what led me to create Help You Home, a travel safety app built to give people peace of mind when things don’t go to plan.
But this isn’t just about travel. It’s about peace of mind for the people we care about and for those who care about us. We all want our loved ones to have freedom and independence, but we also want to know there’s something there to help if they ever need it.
So what can you do to ease that worry when someone’s away from home?
A few simple habits can make a big difference:
- Make sure emergency contacts are saved and easy to find.
- Encourage them to share their travel plans or location with you.
- Have a quick chat about what to do if things change or they feel unsafe.
- Check in before they go, not after something happens.
- Remind them that asking for help isn’t weakness, it’s smart.
Technology can lend a hand too
There are plenty of ways to stay connected, like live location sharing, group chats, or wearable trackers, or apps that store key details and alert others in an emergency.
Tools like Help You Home make it simple to have those supports in place so it isn’t about constant texting or checking in. It’s that kind of reassurance you need once and trust is there when the call comes.
It’s a delicate balance between providing freedom and fostering true independence. Getting that balance right means young people can enjoy their adventures, confident that help’s there if they need it.
And for the parents, it’s knowing they have what they need to stay safe, connected, and always find their way home.
Gráinne designed the Help You Home app to make that peace of mind possible – find out more at helpyouhomeapp.com.
