Transitioning from Winter to Spring

Interior stylist Sheena Noelle shares simple, thoughtful ways to gently refresh your home as the seasons shift, without rushing straight into full spring mode.

As winter loosens its grip, our homes often crave the same shift we do. More light. More air. A sense of renewal. The transition from winter to spring is not about rushing into florals and pastels, but about gently lifting the mood of your space. This in-between season is about editing, not erasing.

Start by subtracting

Before adding anything new, remove visual weight. Store away heavy throws, faux fur and excess layers, but keep one or two cosy elements for those cooler evenings. Simply clearing space can instantly make a room feel lighter and more breathable.

Swap textures, not furniture

Refreshing your home does not require a full redesign. Replacing chunky knits and dark velvets with linen, cotton or lighter-weight wool can completely change the feel of a room. Even something as simple as switching cushion covers or adding a relaxed slipcover can make a noticeable difference.

Brighten the palette softly

Instead of leaning into bold spring pastels, opt for gentle neutrals. Warm whites, soft clay tones, pale sage and muted blues reflect light beautifully and create a natural bridge between winter depth and spring freshness.

Let the light in

Clean windows are often overlooked, yet they make a huge difference. Pull back heavy drapery and, where privacy is needed, layer with sheers instead. A well-placed mirror can also help bounce natural light around the room, subtly lifting the space.

Refresh with nature

Early spring greenery should feel effortless rather than over-styled. Branches, budding stems or potted herbs bring life indoors and signal the changing season without overwhelming your space. It is about suggestion, not abundance.

Edit, then accent

Winter encourages us to layer and accumulate. Spring rewards restraint. Once surfaces are cleared, add a single seasonal accent such as a ceramic vessel, glassware or a lighter-toned tray to quietly mark the transition.

The key to moving from winter to spring at home is patience. Let your space shift with the season, not ahead of it. When spring arrives in full bloom, your home will already be ready to welcome it.
