A Haven for New Parents on the Shore Road

Local Women editor Kim Kelly and her sister Bronagh Burrows visited Sandra’s Nursery Corner with baby Sinéad to discover why this Shore Road shop remains a lifeline for new parents.
There are some shops that make you slow down the moment you walk through the door. Sandra’s Nursery Corner is one of them.
I visited recently with my sister Bronagh and her gorgeous new daughter, my niece Sinéad, who is just a couple of months old. Bronagh is in the thick of new motherhood. As the mum of a teenager, I am 17 years removed from it. Between us, we represent two very different points on the parenting timeline. What surprised us both was just how much we can learn in one visit.
Sandra’s is the kind of shop that barely exists on the high street anymore. It is a proper, family-run business. Not rushed or trying to upsell you, just women who know what they are talking about and who genuinely want to help.
The three women working that day were extraordinary. Every question was answered with confidence. Every option was explained without pressure. They knew the difference between prams that suit country walks and those best for city pavements. They talked through car seats, travel systems, accessories and safety in a way that felt calm and reassuring, not overwhelming.
It has been a long time since I had a newborn. I did not realise just how much things have changed. Did you know prams can now come with heated gloves? Neither did I. Bronagh was fascinated by the clever design features. I was amazed by how thoughtful everything has become. A lot of the prams come from Scandinavian countries and the colours alone are beautiful. Soft greens, warm neutrals, greys that actually feel warm.
What makes the experience different from shopping online is the chance to try things properly. You can lift prams, fold them, test handles, feel fabrics and see how everything works. There is space. There is a toilet and baby changing facility. You are encouraged to take your time. This matters.
New parents are tired. Hormonal. Emotional. Often unsure. The last thing they need is to feel rushed or judged. Sandra’s understands that instinctively.
Bronagh loved it. She loved chatting. She loved being able to ask questions without feeling silly. Sinéad, meanwhile, behaved like a tiny professional model!
What struck me most was how rare this kind of service has become. So many of us now shop in places where the staff are teenagers doing their best with limited training, or we shop online and hope for the best. In Sandra’s, the women are experts. They know babies. They know prams. They know what works and what does not.
You can walk in and say who you are, where you live, how you exercise, what your lifestyle looks like, and they will match you with the right product. Not the most expensive one. The right one. There is no sense of being sold to. It feels like being guided and supported.
It is also deeply rooted in its community. Families return because their parents bought their prams there. Sometimes even their grandparents. There is continuity and trust. A sense that this place has always been here when people need it.
Standing there with Bronagh and Sinéad, it became clear why this shop still matters.
Becoming a parent is joyful, but it is also daunting. There is so much you do not know. So much you think you should know. Places like Sandra’s take some of that weight away. They say, quietly, you do not have to figure this out on your own.
We left feeling genuinely impressed.
Bronagh left knowing she will be back for that grey stroller! I left thinking how different those early weeks might feel if more people had access to spaces like this.
In a world of click-and-collect and next-day delivery, Sandra’s Nursery Corner offers something far more valuable. Time. Knowledge. Care. Human connection.
It is not just a shop. And in 2026, that’s something worth celebrating.
