A New Chapter for Ballyliffin Lodge & Spa

Ballyliffin Lodge & Spa has unveiled a beautiful €1.5 million makeover, transforming guest spaces and raising the standard of four-star hospitality along Donegal’s Atlantic coast.
With its breathtaking views over the North Atlantic, its warm Donegal welcome, and its long-standing reputation as one of Inishowen’s most loved hotels, Ballyliffin Lodge & Spa has never been one to stand still.
Now, following an impressive €1.5 million makeover, the four-star coastal retreat has entered an exciting new era, one that firmly cements its place as a beacon of high-quality hospitality in County Donegal.
The Ballyliffin Lodge is already well known for its ability to deliver unforgettable weddings, standout events and relaxing leisure breaks, while also quietly achieving something remarkable behind the scenes within recent years, the hotel has invested heavily in green technologies, earning recognition as one of Ireland’s greenest hotels.
For a rural hotel in the heart of Inishowen, it’s an achievement that speaks volumes about ambition, innovation and pride in place.
And guests clearly agree. With annual occupancy rates consistently exceeding 90%, Ballyliffin Lodge continues to attract visitors from across Ireland and around the world, drawn by the area’s natural beauty, the nearby world-famous Ballyliffin Golf Club, and the hotel’s effortless blend of elegance and comfort.
A Transformation Designed Around Guests
From the moment you arrive, the appeal is easy to understand – there’s stylish interiors, exceptional local produce on the menu, and leisure and spa facilities that make it a true destination hotel rather than simply a place to stay.
The decision to refurbish came from simply listening to what guests want.
Management took on board feedback from guests and staff, with comfort and experience guiding every stage of the project. The result was a carefully planned transformation designed not only to meet expectations, but to surpass them.
In an extraordinary turnaround, the hotel closed its doors for just 25 days, and in that short time completed a major upgrade across the property.
The Refurbishment Included
- 40 guest bedrooms and bathrooms
- Public toilets
- Corridors and stairways
- Reception, foyer and entrance spaces
- Bar and restaurant areas
- Terrace upgrades
While Ballyliffin Lodge has always carried a sense of classic coastal charm, the renovation has elevated the experience even further. It offers refreshed, contemporary luxury while remaining warm and accessible.
A Proud Milestone for the Team
Hotel General Manager Ron Kerrigan described the project as a proud milestone for everyone involved at the Lodge.
“Very exciting times for all concerned at the Lodge,” he said. “We planned this large-scale refurbishment for a year and we are so thrilled now to see it all come to fruition.
“We undertook such a large project in such a short amount of time, but we knew it was possible – and now we can all reap the rewards.”
The refurbishment also follows a significant anniversary for the hotel, marking 20 years in business last year.
“It was just so fitting to now invest further in the hotel, and that will stand us in good stead for the next 20 years,” Ron added.
Supporting Local Businesses
He also paid tribute to proprietors Sean and Mary Keogh, whose passion continues to drive the Lodge forward, and highlighted the importance of supporting local employment and suppliers throughout the project.
“We worked with many teams, most based in Inishowen. Too many to mention, but special praise goes towards McGonigles & Donegal Tile Centre, Ashley Martin Shopfitters, Coady Electrics, McGonigle Antique Restoration and Wardstone Surfaces.”
Recognition and Looking Ahead
As if the refurbishment wasn’t exciting enough, Ron Kerrigan is currently in the running for Highland Radio’s Business Person of the Year, while Ballyliffin Lodge itself has been nominated for Wedding Venue of the Year, a fitting celebration during such a landmark moment for the hotel.
Guests can keep up with renovation images and behind-the-scenes updates across the hotel’s social media channels.
Because at Ballyliffin Lodge & Spa, one thing is clear – the future looks just as bright as the Atlantic views outside its doors.
