Help With Healing After a C-Section

A caesarean section is major abdominal surgery, yet many women are sent home with little more than a scar and a list of do’s and don’ts. Barbara from Caring Hands Midwife shares how C-Section Scar Therapy and LymphaTouch can support recovery, reduce discomfort and help women reconnect with their bodies after birth.

Across the UK and Ireland

Almost one in two babies is now born by caesarean section. It’s life-saving surgery, but it’s also major abdominal surgery, involving several layers of tissue and a long recovery. Once the stitches heal, many women are surprised to find that their scar still feels tight, numb or tender months later. Other notes include changes in how their tummy looks or feels – a pulling sensation, an overhang or even an area that just doesn’t seem to move freely again.

That’s where C-Section Scar Therapy comes in. This gentle treatment focuses not just on the surface scar, but on the underlying tissue, helping to restore comfort, mobility and connection. It can ease pain, irritation, numbness, tightness and pulling, while also improving the look and feel of the scar over time.

Many women describe feeling emotionally disconnected from their scar after birth, especially if the birth experience didn’t go as planned. Part of my work as a midwife is to help women rebuild that connection and to understand what their body has been through, and to feel at home in it again. Scar therapy sessions are calm, supportive and private, with space to talk through your experience and ask questions at your own pace.

The tools that support recovery

One of the tools I use is LymphaTouch, a non-invasive device that uses gentle negative pressure and vibration to encourage healing from the inside out. It helps increase circulation, reduce swelling and soften tight or fibrous scar tissue. It can also improve lymphatic drainage, which supports the body’s natural healing process and reduces that heavy, uncomfortable feeling some women notice around their scar.

LymphaTouch isn’t just about appearance – it’s about easing pain, comfort and recovery. By lifting and mobilising the tissue, it can help prevent adhesions that cause pain or restriction later on. It can even improve mobility, core strength and overall wellbeing.

C-Section Scar Therapy is suitable from around six to eight weeks after birth, once your wound has healed, and can be beneficial even years later. Scars continue to mature for up to two years, so it’s never too late to start.

What to expect in an appointment

Each appointment includes time to talk, a gentle assessment of the scar and surrounding tissue, guidance on self-massage techniques, and advice on medical-grade products to support healing at home. Many women also find it helps with back or hip pain, bloating or discomfort that they hadn’t realised was linked to their scar.

Your recovery matters, and so does how you feel in your body. C-Section Scar Therapy can be a small but powerful step towards healing – physically and emotionally.
