Make Networking Part of Your 2026 Strategy

By Gayle McVea, Regional Director of The Athena Network Northern Ireland East

Gayle McVea shares why consistent, purposeful networking should be part of every woman’s business plan for the year ahead.

Is networking part of your business strategy?

I’m not talking about turning up at the odd event and hoping something comes of it. I mean setting clear goals, networking with intention and connecting with purpose. If your answer is “not really”, then 2026 is the time to change that.

Consistency is what turns casual connections into meaningful business relationships. Building trust, credibility and opportunity takes time. The more regularly you show up, nurture relationships and offer support, the stronger your network becomes.

Think of networking like tending a garden. You can’t plant a few seeds and expect instant results. You have to water them, check what’s growing and adapt as you go. Over time, people begin to know, like and trust you – and that’s when collaborations happen, referrals come in and new doors open.

Setting networking goals for 2026

Setting networking goals for 2026 is a great way to start the year with focus and energy. Ask yourself who you want to connect with, which relationships will help you grow and how you can offer value to others.

Once your goals are clear, make networking part of your routine. Attend events regularly, follow up after conversations, stay in touch with people who support you and share your experience generously.

Women who network this way don’t just make contacts; they build communities. They become known for reliability, positivity and a genuine willingness to lift others up. That’s how real collaboration and long-term success are built.

Make it part of your business strategy

As you plan for 2026, don’t treat networking as an optional extra. Make it a key part of your business strategy. Show up, connect with intention and be consistent. The relationships you build this year could shape new opportunities for years to come.

If you’d like to see the difference networking a purposeful, empowering part of your business makes, The Athena Network can help. Our community of ambitious women supports one another, shares ideas and celebrates every success – and there’s always room for more.

Your next great connection could be just one conversation away.
