Powering the Future with Apollo Solar

With decades of experience, Apollo Solar is helping customers reduce energy costs while making the switch to renewable energy with confidence.

Renewable energy has undergone a remarkable transformation over the past decade, and Apollo Solar has been at the forefront of that change.

Co-founded by Graeme Stubbs and Leroy Lindsay, the company has built a reputation for designing and installing high-quality solar energy systems that help homeowners, farmers and businesses reduce energy costs while achieving greater energy independence.

Graeme’s passion for construction began at an early age. Growing up, he spent his school holidays working alongside his father, who ran a contracting business. Those early experiences sparked a genuine interest in construction and in helping clients bring their ideas to life.

Following the 2008 recession, opportunities within the construction industry became increasingly limited. Rather than waiting for the market to recover, Graeme chose to invest in his future by developing his expertise in renewable energy.

At the time, the government was encouraging the construction of more environmentally friendly homes, and renewable technologies were beginning to play a greater role in modern building design.

Recognising the industry’s direction of travel, Graeme completed a part-time degree in Sustainable Design and Construction Management before securing a role designing renewable energy systems in 2012.

After gaining valuable industry experience, he established his own business in 2015, specialising in the installation of solar panels, heat pumps and other renewable technologies.

The recent change to legislation for new homes has driven rapid growth in demand for solar energy. As the business expanded, Graeme approached Leroy about joining forces.

Having worked in the renewable energy sector since 2009, Leroy had earned a reputation for his technical expertise and strong work ethic. Together, they founded Apollo Solar, combining their knowledge and experience to deliver tailored renewable energy solutions across Northern Ireland.

A Rapidly Changing Industry

The solar industry has changed significantly in a relatively short period of time.

When Graeme first began installing solar systems, electricity cost around 14p per unit, while solar panels were approximately three times more expensive than they are today.

Now, electricity prices are approaching 35p per unit, while improvements in manufacturing have made solar technology more efficient, more reliable and better value than ever before.

Battery storage has also transformed what solar can offer, allowing households and businesses to store excess electricity for later use and significantly reduce their reliance on the grid.

Today, Apollo Solar is installing as much solar capacity in a single week as would previously have taken six months, reflecting the dramatic increase in demand.

Rising energy costs and global uncertainty have also encouraged more people to consider renewable energy as a practical long-term investment, providing greater control over energy costs while improving energy security.

Solar Energy in Northern Ireland

Despite this growth, Graeme says one misconception remains remarkably common.

Many people still believe solar panels only perform well in hot, sunny climates.

In reality, Northern Ireland’s climate is well suited to solar technology. Solar panels perform most efficiently in cooler temperatures with consistent daylight rather than extreme heat, allowing systems to generate electricity effectively throughout the year.

Apollo Solar uses independently verified MCS data to assess solar irradiance and accurately predict the performance of every installation.

Those figures form the basis of each bespoke system design and projected payback calculation, with the company typically aiming to deliver a return on investment within approximately five years, significantly shorter than the product warranty.

The financial benefits can be substantial.

A professionally designed solar energy system, combined with battery storage, can reduce electricity bills by 75% to 85%, making it one of the most effective long-term investments available to many households and businesses.

Domestic, Agricultural and Commercial Solar

Apollo Solar works with a diverse range of customers, from homeowners seeking to reduce domestic energy costs to farms and commercial businesses with substantial electricity demands.

One recent farming client had been spending more than £1,000 each month on electricity. Following the installation of a bespoke solar system, the next bill fell to just £26.

Whether serving domestic, agricultural or commercial customers, Apollo Solar’s objective remains the same: designing systems that maximise savings while delivering long-term energy independence.

For Graeme, however, the greatest satisfaction comes from seeing the difference these systems make to customers’ everyday lives.

Receiving positive feedback from customers and seeing the savings they achieve provides enormous satisfaction, particularly when they realise just how much control they have gained over their energy costs.

Looking to the Future

Looking ahead, Apollo Solar remains committed to innovation and continuous improvement.

The company is working alongside some of the industry’s leading manufacturers to help develop new renewable energy technologies, ensuring customers continue to benefit from the latest advances in system performance and efficiency.

By focusing on bespoke system design, technical excellence and outstanding customer service, Apollo Solar aims to remain at the forefront of Northern Ireland’s renewable energy sector for many years to come.
