Why Regular Sight Tests Are Vital for Eye and General Health

Brian McKeown from John Laverty Optometrists explains how routine eye exams go far beyond checking prescriptions, offering vital insights into both eye conditions and wider health issues.
The Importance of Regular Sight Tests
A regular sight test is a crucial component of a comprehensive approach to health, not just vision correction.
It can reveal a lot about our overall well-being. Far more than simply updating a prescription for glasses or contact lenses, eye exams, performed by optometrists, are a vital health check that can detect serious eye conditions and even signs of other systemic diseases.
The Role of Optometry in Eye Health
Optometrists are primary eye care providers who specialise in the health of the eye and visual system.
Our expertise allows us to perform comprehensive eye exams, which include a series of tests to evaluate your vision, check for refractive errors (like short- and long-sightedness, astigmatism), and assess the overall health of the eye.
During a sight test, we use specialised equipment like a slit lamp and an ophthalmoscope to examine the retina, optic nerve, and blood vessels at the back of the eye. This detailed look can provide clues about a person’s general health.
The blood vessels in the retina are the only ones in the body that can be seen directly, and changes in their appearance can be an early indicator of conditions like diabetes and high blood pressure, allowing for earlier diagnosis and management.
Early Detection of Eye Diseases
Many common eye diseases develop slowly and without obvious symptoms in their early stages. Conditions such as glaucoma, a leading cause of irreversible blindness, often have no noticeable symptoms until significant vision loss has occurred.
Similarly, age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and diabetic retinopathy can progress silently, causing damage before a person realises anything is wrong.
Regular sight tests are essential for catching these diseases early. By detecting conditions in their initial phases, we can recommend a timely course of action, which may involve monitoring, medical intervention, or a referral to an ophthalmologist.
Early intervention can slow or even halt progression, preserving both sight and quality of life. Without regular check-ups, these conditions could go unnoticed, leading to significant, and often preventable, vision loss.
National Eye Health Week
This message is at the heart of National Eye Health Week, which ran this year from September 22nd to 28th.
The annual campaign raises awareness about the importance of eye health and the need for regular sight tests. It highlights the crucial role that optometrists play in preserving vision and encourages everyone to prioritise eye health.
The campaign also offers practical advice on maintaining good eye health, from adopting a balanced diet and eye-friendly nutrients to protecting your eyes from UV light.
It serves as a reminder that vision is precious and often taken for granted.
By booking a sight test during this week, or at any time of the year, you’re taking a proactive step toward protecting both your vision and your overall health. Don’t wait until you notice a problem – make regular eye exams part of your healthcare routine.
