Your First Tattoo? Here’s What to Expect

Thinking about your first tattoo but not sure where to start? Ultraviolet tattooist Courtney Kilpatrick shares what to know before you book, from choosing the right design to feeling confident in the chair.
For a lot of people, the first tattoo is a big moment.
It might mark a milestone or honour someone important, but alongside the excitement, there is often a bit of nerves too. Will it hurt? What if you panic? How do you know what to get? And what actually happens when you walk into the studio for the first time?
At Ultraviolet in Limavady, tattooist Courtney Kilpatrick understands those nerves well, and says the most important thing is not to rush.
“Don’t rush into it,” she says.
“If you’re worried about the pain, start small and choose one of the less painful areas, like the arm. Most importantly, make sure it’s something you really want, especially if you’re young.”
That advice is often where the process should begin. Before thinking about pain levels or placement, it is worth taking time to choose a design you genuinely connect with.
Trends can be tempting, but a first tattoo tends to feel better when it means something to you, or at least feels like something you will still be happy to wear years from now.
Courtney, who runs her own thriving studio in Limavady, says many people come in feeling nervous, but that usually changes quickly once they understand what to expect.
A first appointment will normally begin with a consultation about the design, placement and size. This is the stage where any last-minute questions can be asked, and where a good tattooist will help guide you if something needs simplified or adjusted to work better on the skin.
Once the design is agreed, the area is cleaned and prepared, and a stencil is usually placed on the skin so you can see the exact position before anything begins.
For nervous first-timers, that moment can actually be reassuring. It gives you a chance to pause, check everything and make sure you are happy.
And yes, it will hurt a little, but probably not as much as you think.
Most people describe the feeling as uncomfortable rather than unbearable, and the level of pain depends on the area being tattooed. Arms are often a popular choice for first tattoos because they tend to be more manageable than more sensitive areas.
Afterwards, aftercare matters just as much as the tattoo itself. Keeping the area clean, following your tattooist’s instructions and resisting the urge to pick or scratch while it heals all make a big difference to how the finished tattoo looks.
For Courtney, the best first tattoos are not always the biggest or boldest. They are the ones people feel happy with from the moment they leave the studio.
At Ultraviolet, that first tattoo is not just about the ink. It is about helping clients feel comfortable to wear their story on their skin.
